Project Brief

As Capital One transforms its retail properties, the bank invited CallisonRTKL to create a signature branch for their prominent location at Union Square, New York. The three-story, 12,000 square foot flagship combines branch operations, staff training facilities and generous public gathering spaces into one.

Project Innovation/Need

The entry level is entirely public-facing and is anchored by a Peet’s Coffee shop; and includes abundant seating to facilitate impromptu meetings, momentary respites – or simply the recharging of phones and laptops.

A dramatic stair invites customers to a second floor of even more gathering spaces, as well as tellers, private consulting areas and offices.

An LED wall that frames the ATMs on the ground floor extends to the second level where it emerges from the building as an awning and polychromatic digital screen, removing any doubt this might be a typical bank branch.

This award celebrates creative and innovative design in the retail environment. Consideration given to attracting, engaging and motivating customers to make purchases, the use of colour, lighting, space, product information, sensory inputs (smell, touch, sound) as well as technologies such as digital displays and interactive installations.
