Project Overview

Da Si Xi, a regional noodle restaurant opened in 1989, right in the student clustered CYCU district. To expand its business and improve service, it commissioned Mr. Iuan Kai Fang’s team to tailor a brand-new Da Si Xi. Inspired by the cultural quality of China’s northeastern district, Fan imagined the store as full of spatial impressions transported from China to Taiwan.

Project Brief

Sky, earth and man are the three elements that govern the harmony of the Universe. Fan took inspiration from I-Ching: “The Universe first has sky and earth than all creatures find their existence.” He created a precise space in a horizontal world where earth and sky expand. Chinese prints of Da Si Xi are not typically identified; rather the three words are divided and installed in different positions. The first character ”Da”, literally means “big” and is installed on top of the ceiling. A strip of the character Da further represents a river running down from the sky to the ground. The second character “Si” represents earth and “Xi” represents men. Metaphorical meanings gives the space a poetic reading and the interesting installations of Chinese characters infill a meaning form traditional to modern.

Project Need

Chinese traditional motifs are everywhere in this restaurant; carved decorative round windox provide the significance of a prosperous wish. This motif is used in a window gives further interest as light passes through. It becomes diffused and casts beautiful shadows on the surface of the interior furnishings. Border fences among seats are leather-bound panels; this sensible texture gives comfort to the customers.

Design Challenge

The restaurant is right in a food court in a famous department store. To serve its customers in a more convenient way, the cashier and reception were recessed to make way for a waiting zone. Fanced by a white color metal screen, the reception enjoys a rich visual depth. Internal wood furnishings enjoy a perfect match with the metal white color screen.

Sustainability

The artificial river running on top of the ceiling is a major impression of the
Restaurant. Chinese motif appear in many positions reducing the usual rigid food court design of most diners. Fang’s talent in theatrical design is fully exploited; the restaurant is a stage where customers enjoy in to their sensory satisfaction.
