Zespri Green and Gold Campaign - Zespri International Limited / Anthem Sydney

City of Sydney 360 Posters - City of Sydney / Frost*collective

Advertising - Outdoor, Retail, POS

- Gold

The City of Sydney is a Local Government Authority, which operates five truly beautiful and world-class pools, with attached fitness centres: Boy Charlton, Ian Thorpe, Victoria Park, Cook & Philip, and Prince Alfred Park. Previously, each facility sold their memberships independently and being a member of one did not provide members with access to any of the other facilities run by the City of Sydney. The opportunity for the City of Sydney was to create cross-facility membership offers that compete with other gyms with multiple locations (like local market leaders, Fitness First), as well as group training ‘bootcamps’. In a sense, there was an opportunity to create a ‘club’, brought to Sydney-siders by the City of Sydney. Membership to this ‘club’ could offer access to all of the pools, gyms facilities, classes, crèches and so on, at each of the facilities run by the City of Sydney.

ACON Ending HIV Campaign: - ACON / Frost*collective

Advertising - Outdoor, Retail, POS

- Silver

Over the past three years, the scientific and other communities of interest in the HIV sector have broadly accepted that with a combination of a massive escalation in testing rates, earlier treatment and in the presence of a sustained safe sex culture, it is feasible to see the virtual elimination of HIV by 2020. Since 2013 ACON has been leading the way in raising awareness and starting positive discussions to end HIV transmissions in NSW. ACON has taken on this challenge to educate and mobilise the community about HIV through the multi-phased Ending HIV campaign.

Chatime 5th Year Anniversary - Chatime Australia / RKCO

Advertising - Print

- Gold

This is a poster design project for celebrating the 5th year anniversary of Chatime, a fresh tea specialist franchise promoting modernised Taiwanese tea culture. We were inspired by the joy of the 5th year anniversary and also the believe of Chatime, who hand craft all their tea products upon order. Same as coffee brewing, tea brewing involve lots of hand crafted technique: tea field selection, tea leaves drying, tea leaves selection, temperature and water. It is well believed that tea brewing is a highly detailed art form. This inspired us to use an hand crafted delicate art form, paper rolling art to represent the art of tea brewing. The colourful design reflect the joy of the 5th year anniversary of the company. This is a project full of love and tears, the illustration was done purely by paper rolling. No 3D rendering program was used to create the artwork.

Bricklane - Linear Developments / A+ Design Group

Architecture - Proposed

- Silver

Our aesthetic inspiration was taken from the historical use of the area. In the 1800’s Erskineville was renowned for its brick production and large scale industries for leather and timber. The surrounding areas were lined with workers cottages and small terrace homes. The idea of combining the large industrial scale aesthetics in a juxtaposition to the more refined decorative residential home, has created some interesting meeting spaces for social interaction, creating a real sense of community. This concept was also drawn in essence from some of the inner west’s trendy hotspots. Examples such as Camperdown's ‘Dues Ex Machina’(a renovated factory space) and in Alexandria the highly popular ‘The Grounds’ which is located in an old pie factory.

Fairness Test - Campaign for Australian Aid / Agency

Digital Experience - Mobile

- Silver

This year, Australia's aid budget was cut to its lowest ever level. The Campaign for Australian Aid needed to raise awareness about the massive cuts to a brand new younger audience who don't traditionally engage with charities - so we created The Fairness Test, an interactive, animated mobile site that found out what Australians think is "fair." From Taylor Swift disappearing from Spotify, to Prince Philip's knighthood, to cuts to overseas aid programs, we discovered how the country of the Fair Go feels on a range of controversial topics. By swiping left or right to vote on each issue, each user's choices led to the discovery of their own 'Fairness Personality', a personality profile represented by a cute illustrated character they could share with their friends on social media to promote the campaign. After learning about "Fairness" through the quiz, users were asked to email Joe Hockey and their local MP to campaign against the unfair cuts to Australian Aid. Through the Fairness Test, we got tens of thousands of people involved in the Campaign For Australian Aid, emailing their politicians and spreading the word about fairness to their friends.

Transport for NSW: ORPA - Transport for NSW / Outware Mobile

Digital Experience - Mobile

- Gold

ORPA is a beautifully designed Android app that replaces a basic utility tool with a delightful and more functional mobile solution. Transport for NSW’s Opal card allows customers an easier and more convenient way to pay for their public transport using trains, buses, ferries and light rail across a large geographic footprint. Instead of buying a paper ticket, customers load value onto their Opal card and tap it at a card reader at the start and end of each journey. The system automatically calculates the fare and deducts it from the value stored on the Opal card. ORPA uses near field communication (NFC) technology to allow Transport Officers to check that customers are travelling using the correct Opal card and paying the correct fare. The app interface is clean and simple, hiding complex processes from the end user, resulting in a quick and easy user experience that is both effective and delightful.

Travel Money Oz- Digital signage - Travel Money Group

Digital Experience - Signage

- Silver

In 2014 Travel Money Group (Oz and NZ) decided to revolutionise the foreign exchange 'rates board'. Our goal was to deliver the brand experience 'we make foreign currency simple' when communicating exchange rates. The old store screens were manual red LED, which consultants had to programme daily and could not even display the full currencies list of 60+ currencies. Non-cash products were promoted solely through limited range of posters. From late 2014 Travel Money Oz opened 11 new stores in the Sydney area, and retrofitted digital rates screens into all existing stores. 4 different screen types and tailored playlists were developed to integrate into existing legacy retail store designs, and also formed a key component of the three new format store designs being rolled out across new stores opened. Using iBase media players and the Scala Content Management System, screens deliver tailored messaging to store with real time 5 minute upload. Playlists can be tailored to store, store format or region. High impact visuals Inform and Inspire customers to deliver a differentiated brand experience.

NSW National Parks - Office of the Environment and Heritage NSW / Reading Room Australia

Digital Experience - Website

- Gold

Where are you going this weekend? So many web services are clambering to answer this question. The National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) was faced with the mammoth task of elevating the diversity of its stunning and stirring spaces to an audience awash with options. Compounding its challenge, was its broader mandate to protect and share the environment and heritage of NSW. This extends to everything from letting you know of National Parks closures and emergencies in progress, booking your romantic weekend at the Smoky Cape Lighthouse Keepers' Cottages and helping you work with the Threatened species volunteering programme. In discharging its mandate NPWS has a vast number of products, services and conservation that it’s responsible for, but there was very low brand awareness and our research indicated it was only seen as a regulator for fines and passes.

SBS Upfronts - SBS Media / AZBcreative

Event Experience

- Silver

We created a multi-level interactive experience to celebrate the diversity of SBS programming and introduce the new season’s line up to the media and agency partners. We wanted to create a sense of anticipation and surprise, to show the guests that SBS is a broadcaster going beyond expectations. For the five events in Sydney, we transformed Luxe Studios into a two-stage presentation. The first zone was sleek and white, to emphasise SBS’s technical expertise and future programming. We custom-built oversized smart phone and tablet shaped cabinets to house flat screens playing teasers for upcoming programs, to remind visitors that SBS works across all media platforms. Perspex tables and white chairs tied the theme together, with curated objects representing different countries, painted gloss white, to represent the broadcaster’s international outlook. We used coloured lighting through the presentation, which reflected off the glossy surfaces, to bring the audience right into the message. As they enjoyed the presentation with perfectly edited visuals, the guests enjoyed mineral water and a rather minimalist canapé selection. Perhaps they were slightly disappointed by this chic, yet austere hospitality...all that soon changed, as one entire wall suddenly moved out and large posts with bunting were carried into the space. Then a huge tapestry rug was unfurled and buskers invaded the presentation space, bringing the world of SBS alive, in an explosion of sight, sound, colour and amazing food! The guests were then encouraged to explore the international market zone buzzing with street food stalls, providores and roving performers to convey the network’s diversity through sight, smell, taste and sound. There were Chinese and Vietnamese hawker stalls, Moroccan spice markets, Italian marble counters groaning with fresh salumi, tomatoes and fragrant basil; French bicycles piled high with baguettes and of course, native Australian bites and bush herbs. The immersive atmosphere became a real talking point and was also a great way to introduce SBS’s world-class food programming.

The Domain rebrand - Botanic Gardens and Centennial Parklands / Principals

Graphic Design - Corporate Identity and Branding

- Silver

Principals were engaged by the Royal Botanic Garden & Domain Trust to strategically review the organisation and prepare a brand platform that emphasises the importance of their work in conservation, horticulture and science. While this conservation-anchored territory was well suited to the three botanic gardens, it did not effectively encompass the Domain, a community amenity with a wholly different purpose, as a gathering place dedicated to celebration, not conservation. The Trust had also been battling with criticism in the media suggesting that the Gardens have become overly commercial, when in fact the vast bulk of commercial activity happens in the Domain, a distinct venue that the Trust happens to manage in parallel to the Gardens. Our recommendation was to create a clearer distinction between the Domain and the Garden precincts to help combat this criticism.

Tour de Sydney - Hoyne Design

Graphic Design - Illustration and Type

- Silver

Hoyne Principal Andy had a harebrained idea of creating a poster that reflects the uniqueness of Surry Hills and he coupled that with a brief that was incredibly open and void of direction. UTS Alumni Green - The University of Technology, Sydney / ASPECT Studios

- Gold

The University of Technology, Sydney is a city campus known for its brutalist architecture. Opportunities for socialising in a landscape setting are limited. The Alumni Green was a unique opportunity to transform the campus by providing an oasis at the heart of the campus, creating a human centrepiece for UTS. The new space is a vital piece of green infrastructure in an otherwise highly urbanised part of the CBD. The Alumni Green is composed of a series of rich landscape experiences; - The Green - a large open turf platform with a sun-filled centre to facilitate events and informal recreation, - The Heart - a paved amphitheatre designed to host events and to facilitate circulation across the campus, and - The Garden, a series of richly planted 'pods' or rooms, which are designed to provide intimate scaled activities and programs, such as studying, playing table tennis, eating lunch in a garden setting. By prioritising the ‘social infrastructure’, the design of places for people to work and to socialise, the UTS Alumni Green has become the social heart of the campus: a place where people want to work, stay, be and play, creating a ‘sticky campus’.

This is to ensure that CWH affordable housing can only ever be seen, by all stakeholders, as quality residential accommodation. The North Eveleigh Carriage Workshops site is of high historic, aesthetic and technological significance. To retain the heritage and culture of the workshops, Arcadia implemented an extensive reuse of the materials from the site into the design. The result is a setting that connects residents to the unique context while contributing to the social atmosphere.

Blackout - Custom77

Product Design - Entertainment

- Gold

We wanted to create an extreme guitar design but which can appeal to majority of players. It had to be classical yet original. The guitar had to be retro but with a great confort found on modern guitars. The design is a mix of retro/vintage and futuristic concept inspired by 50's american cars. The Blackout was exhibited for the first time at the 2014 NAMM show in Los Angeles. American press, artists and visitors really liked the design. It has been featured in many magasines after the show and recurring comments were that guitar looked "original yet classical". Japan press and distributors were really interested too. Terry Burrows, biggest selling guitar writers in the world, is in love with the design and will feature it in the next "1001 guitars you must play before you die" book.

Smart Cricket Ball - RMIT University

Product Design - Concept

- Silver

Cricket is the 2nd-most popular sport in the world. According to the Argus Report, under the ‘immediate actions to improve the team’s operations’ recommended by Cricket Australia was the improvement of Australia’s Team’s skills in the area of bowling, specifically ‘Spin bowling and captaincy of spin bowling’. Cricket is the number one participation sport in Australia, and also has highest penetration of any sport in Australia. The key growth area is female cricket with a 39% increase (22% of total participants). In spite of the popularity of cricket, performance data, other than Hawk eye data, are not available, as the bat cannot be instrumented by law (no other material allowed than wood), and the ball is too small for being instrumented. The problems to be solved in this project were threefold: 1) instrument the ball despite its small size; 2) discover new performance parameters not known previously due to lack of data; and 3) use these data for personal performance management of bowlers. The smart ball assesses the bowling performance with telemetry and a data recorder and visualises the data. The ball is suitable for talent identification; continuous testing of performance including fatigue, and for player selection.

Anaphylaxis Monitor - RMIT University

Product Design - Concept

- Silver

Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction and is potentially life threatening. Once shock has begun an adrenaline dose must be administered immediately and emergency services contacted. Fatalities more often occur away from home and are associated with either not using, or a delay in the use of adrenaline; children are at a major risk due to this. My proposal is to create a product for children that monitors and automatically administers adrenalin whilst simultaneously contacting emergency services.

The family narrative is unmistakable within the restaurant walls – the interior design reinforces this theme by creating cosy vibes through vibrant décor and photos of precious family memories adorning the walls. To match the impressive ambience, the food is equally delightful, with mouth-watering flavours evermore enhanced by the environment. UTS Wayfinding and Signage (Frost*collective & BrandCulture) - University of Technology, Sydney / Frost*collective & BrandCulture

Wayfinding

- Gold

Urbanite and BrandCulture collaborated on the major overhaul and redesign of the wayfinding and signage systems for the city campus of The University of Technology, Sydney. Over the last few years UTS has been a key contributor to the transformation of the southern gateway to the city’s CBD, with major developments to reinvent the campus and also the critical access point to Sydney’s CBD. As a campus sitting amongst commercial, retail, hospitality and residential spaces, UTS identified a key objective; critical to the success of the UTS Masterplan, was the need to address the fragmented nature of the campus itself. Leading the strategic planning, Urbanite, (part of Frost*collective) uncovered key insights through in-depth research and stake holder workshops, which formed the basis of the new wayfinding strategy covering nomenclature hierarchy, sign hierarchy and placement strategy, graphic layout for the signage and a pictogram family to ensure consistency of messages. After the development of strategy, design response and the brand manual, Urbanite partnered with BrandCulture to identify strategic opportunities to improve the user experience while delivering the prototype, production and installation phases.
