Property developer Ballymore has vowed to “bring the arts to a new audience” by creating a number of dedicated performance spaces in a multi-million-pound Docklands housing project.

London City Island is a 12-acre residential development of 1,700 properties under construction on the Leamouth Peninsula in east London.

The space — due for completion next year — will also feature artisan restaurants and shops as well as the City Island Arts Club, where residents will have access to a screening room, gym, concierge service and swimming pool.

From 2018, the English National Ballet will also be based there. Hayleigh O’Farrell, head of communications at Ballymore, told the Standard it was keen to ensure City Island would contribute to London’s arts scene by encouraging fresh talent and providing indoor and outdoor spaces for groups to meet, discuss ideas and perform.

Ms O’Farrell said: “It is really important to us that our developments are not just residential and there is a lot on offer to those who live there and in the surrounding area.

We would very much like it to become a cultural hub that can contribute to the London arts scene — especially now that we will host the English National Ballet from 2018. That will help us really put the island on the cultural map.
