Project Brief

The lighting design brief was twofold:
Firstly to simply put the focus on the merchandise, and secondly to contribute to a relaxed, user friendly environment that architects and specifiers would enjoy visiting and being a part of.
So, a combination of functional and emotional.

Project Innovation/Need

The lighting environment splits into a number of different smaller environments- this is due to the nature of the space, which is over three levels with various ceiling heights.
The main space is the highest and is open to structure. Here we used LED spotlights to pick out the merchandise displays and add theatre and drama to the space.
In the living area there is a dropped ceiling to create a domestic scale environment. Here we've used recessed linear fixtures for a horizontal accent, and some downlights to add highlights.
The bathroom area has the lowest ceiling and here we created three very shallow ceiling recesses with LED strip lighting to create an overall glow. The details and textures in the displays are picked out with recessed spots.
For the meeting are we used a large wire form pendant, which fills the volume but at the same time leaves the space open.
The open office area is evenly illuminated with suspended T5 fixtures.
Colour temperature of all lights is 3000K which provides warmth and brings out colour.

Design Challenge

The challenges came from the varying nature of the space and the need for detailed illumination of the displays while providing a relaxed atmosphere for customers.
Spotlighting focuses the light on display elements, provides the necessary visibility of detail and creates sparkle.
The customer areas are lit by a combination of overspill and indirect light.
By economical use of light we have used light and shadow to create an engaging and immersive environment.
The overall impression is atmospheric and conducive to relaxed exploration.

Sustainability

Through the use of LED light fixtures, not over lighting the space and overall efficiency in the use of both artificial light and natural light (in the areas it was available) we achieved a lighting load of just under 5W/sqm, compared to the maximum permissible 22W/sqm for retail space.

Natural light is used effectively in the kitchen display area at the front of the showroom.

The floor finish plays a large part in the efficiency of the lighting, being a large format, light coloured tile that reflects light up on to the displays rather than absorbing it like for example a dark carpet would.
