Project Brief

The concept was to deliver accurate weather information quickly and beautifully - to have the user seeing the weather details they want within a few seconds of opening the app.

Project Innovation / Need

The weather information it provides is of much higher quality, immediacy and relevance than what is provided by US weather suppliers via the built-in iPhone weather application. It also includes important local current weather warnings and alerts, and is includes various types of data not covered in competing apps.

It is innovative in the way it preloads information from surrounding weather stations, so that the user can instantly scroll to other locations without experiencing download delays, and similarly in pre-loading the latest radar images - again to be seen by the user without any delay.

It is also innovative in its UX design with the use of transparent overlays - maintaining an attractive, themed background but not detracting from the clarity of presented information.

User Experience

User interaction was paramount in the design of the app. Typical users of weather apps want only the minimum possible interaction time - just to check the forecast or current weather or radar images. The app is configurable to allow the user to start with the forecast or current weather view, and by preloading additional data, related information is available to the user instantly.

A similarly important issue was clearly indicating how old the present data was - other weather apps can be very vague about when their data was issued and when it is meant to apply, and those that do typically label them with a clock time. Oz Weather instead indicates how many minutes old the data is - much easier to comprehend at a glance.

Project Marketing

Marketing is necessarily mainly through app store visibility and word of mouth from existing users - unit revenue is too low to make marketing campaigns viable.

This category relates to applications themed around informing users on the weather. It includes general weather applications as well as specifics such as surf/snow reports and tools such barometers.
