Project Overview

The ELLE ECRITE DESK is a sleek and elegant executive desk featuring solid American Walnut timber and leather detailing. The desk has been designed to tread lightly on sculptural legs whilst not compromising on functionality. Features include drawers, a hinged top for a power adapter and charger storage. Expandable desk wings to create a larger working surface if required, gives the desk its versatility.

DURIE DESIGN

Team

We launched a range of JAMIE DURIE For RIVA 1920 products at Milan Furniture Fair 2013 and we wanted to design new pieces to submit for inclusion into our range for RIVA 1920 2014 collection at Milan. We felt a sleek executive desk featuring solid timber and leather detail would be a great addition to our launch collection with RIVA 1920. The RIVA team loved the design and included the ELLE ECRITE DESK at Milan Furniture Fair as part of the JAMIE DURIE For RIVA 1920 range at Milan Furniture Fair 2014.

Project Brief

The brief was to create a light and luxurious desk as an interior furniture piece that would work well in most modern contemporary home interiors. An executive desk that feels more like a fine piece of high-end furniture rather than utilitarian.

Project Innovation/Need

The beautiful grain of American Walnut is suited to the lovely flat surfaces of this desk design. The sleek architectural elements of this piece alludes to the vocabulary of Danish and Mid-Century Modern styles. We wanted to create a delicate piece of furniture that could expand into a large working surface for maximum functionality. Then also, contract for a ‘lightness of being’ effect when not in use. The ability to be high tech is incorporated in a covert way with the addition of power adaptor and charger storage being out of sight.

Design Challenge

We always try and put ourselves in the place of the end user of any particular product we are working on and try to incorporate all the functional, beautiful and also left-of-centre surprises that we would like to receive as a customer buying one of our pieces.

Sustainability

The earth and its environment are important to us. We like collaborating with RIVA 1920 because they respect the earth and its environment too and work with such a special natural material - wood. RIVA 1920 endeavour to protect the environment through the production cycle and produce furniture conceived by designers, using only solid wood from sustainable, managed forests and with natural finishes. They also look at innovative ways to recycle old timbers.

This award celebrates creative and innovative design for either a component or overall product. Consideration given to aspects that relate to human usage, aesthetics, selection of components and materials, and the resolution of assembly, manufacturing and the overall function.
