Project Overview

Broadway art house cinema is the premier location for red carpet events in Auckland, New Zealand. The cinema is located in Newmarket, Auckland in a stylish suburb littered with antique shops, cafes, bars and design stores.
The project is part of an existing two storey building, with the interior being a series of spaces, such as the ground floor cinema street entry, cinema foyer, candy bar, cocktail lounge bar, function room, new commercial kitchen and 8 auditoriums over an area of 3,500 sqm.
The project encompasses a multitude of bespoke elements such as carpet design, lighting, signage and furniture fusing the era's of art deco, 20th century 42nd street, broadway NYC.

Team

The team is 3 people on the Decorum design side and client side 2 key people both based in Sydney.
We also worked with local manufacturers, Virtual light for bespoke lighting and signage elements. The entire construction and trade team were Kiwi's.

Project Brief

The brief was to create a destination for film industry premier red carpet events. In addition, an art house cinema that would attract local businesses for corporate events and general public seeking a unique cinema experience.
We drew design inspiration from 20th century, 42nd street theatres and the old 19th Century Parisian Cinemas cinema interiors. This contextual reference led us to create the Broadway cinema interiors to be eclectic , layered and subtly feminine and glamourous.
This was translated in the design by custom terrazzo floor's at entry, with deco fan motif. Art deco chain motifs and fans are featured in the bespoke broadloom carpet design throughout, Antique gold porter's specialist paint adorn the foyer and concourse walls.
The candy bar is located under a double height void where 20 drum pendants float creating a visual feature. Mosaic and bevelled edge tiles, tortoiseshell resin bar top and a movie projector playing classics in the cocktail lounge bar
Key specialist lighting elements in a mirrored brass finish such as the decorative wall lighting/mirrors to the cocktail lounge bar emulating a backstage theatre vanity mirror. The cinema entry signage is representative of the original paper cinema ticket profile.

Project Innovation/Need

We created a new cinema destination experience both visually and experientially. Broadway is where the public can come and see a film but also have a restaurant quality meal and a cocktail in the bar. Parallel to this local businesses can hire a function room, have catering and watch a film in a dedicated auditorium. It is also a corporate venue for industry film premiers.

Design Challenge

There were many challenges in this project. Firstly was the end use which was for 3 different audiences/target market's.

Secondly the existing cinema was entirely operational during our whole construction program.

Lastly, the ground floor is occupied by a public swimming pool.

Sustainability

The building is is a two storey existing building with a public swimming pool on the ground floor. Previously our site was a blockbuster event cinema that we had to convert to an art house cinema.

We tried to adopt as many of the existing original elements such as the ceilings, walls, balustrades, chrome detailing, skylights in our new design.

We also sourced local textiles, furniture, lighting and building materials in New Zealand.
