Project Brief

Recruiting for the NSW Police had been on hold for an extended period and was due to be reopened in early 2014. NSW Police were keen to give their old recruiting site a makeover to bring it in-line with more modern public websites. With the young demographic and proliferation of mobile devices it was a must for the new website to be implemented in a responsive manner. As a government website compliance with WCAG 2.0 AA accessibility guidelines was a necessity.

Training to become a NSW Police officer involves a course of study at Charles Sturt University. Because CSU maintains course information on their own website, this information also needed to be brought across to the NSW Police Recruitment website but to still be maintainable at the original source.

Project Innovation/Need

The NSW Police Force and CSU have formed a unique partnership to design, develop and deliver police recruit education. The Associate Degree in Policing Practice (ADPP) focuses on foundational studies, applied skills and knowledge necessary for the modern police professional.

This cross-over led to a large amount of duplication of content between the two sites (CSU and NSW Police) and also a disjointed experience for the user as they jumped back and forth between the sites.

Design Challenge

Responsive design was a crucial part of this project. The site had to look modern, clear in its delivery of information while still meeting stringent government accessibility guidelines. NSW Police had impressive videos that had been produced for other campaigns and wanted to promote the real side of policing through rich media. The HTML5 video on the homepage allowed the use of rich media across different devices in a highly engaging way.

Future Impact

One of the goals of the project was to be able to reuse content from the CSU site and display it on the NSW Police site. This would mean updating the content in one system and viewing in multiple areas. The site utilised a technique called remote content allowing for content reuse while maintaining the different styling on each site. The result has been highly successful and the user is completely unaware of this innovative solution being used.
