Project Brief

The brief had two core thematics to be resolved within the space – To engage and showcase 3M’s deep and rich heritage, whilst celebrating the company’s greatest assets - the inventors and scientists responsible for developing the products that 3M has in 1000’s of workspaces around the world.

THERE’s design celebrated dozens of key innovators through hand drawn illustrations and graphically screened images which were applied to the glazing throughout the workspace.

Project Innovation/Need

3M has a large range of adhesive products and a key part of the brief was to showcase the films and vinyls as much as possible throughout the environment. Phase 2 of the project was to design the interactive information displays for the Innovation Centre where the fabrication process and product innovations were explained and demonstrated.

Design Challenge

Develop a simple and effective design demarcation between floors to aid the ease of navigation. This was achieved through distilling a shape for each floor which would be applied uniformly as an image and typographical treatment. The inspiration was derived from one of 3M’s proprietary innovation techniques - micro replication.

Effectiveness

3M uses it’s environment not just as a place to do business, but as a destination for clients and specifiers to engage with their range of products and the cutting edge technologies that produce them. When walking through the space, visitors are given an insight into the innovators and their stories, the products they helped create, and their myriad of interesting uses throughout history.
