UNE came to Squiz with the intention to position itself as Australia's most recognised quality provider of distance education, a need for a refresh of their Digital brand and desire to increase online student applications and enrollments.

The University of New England was looking for a new website to attract prospective students and cater to their specific journeys of discovery through the site to culminate in online application. The website needed to deliver information through clear navigational paths and ensure that both of UNE’s distinct audiences would be able to find the information that would meet their needs. Working in close collaboration with the UNE team we moved into re -articulating the entire UNE online brand, including photoshoots and creative concepts.
This was all backed up by an in-depth content strategy, modular technical implemenation, complex integration as well as training for 140 users onsite. We also utilised search by Funnelback, creating a customised search functionality that allows users to ‘Find an Expert’ and drive a unique search driven mobile solution.
Project Innovation/Need
The old UNE website was text heavy, out-dated, difficult to navigate and did not reflect the UNE’s market leadership in online distance education. UNE needed to dramatically modernise their web presence to be contemporary and engaging and migrate content from a legacy CMS to a more modern system that could provide security as well as scalability for the future.
Design Challenge
To begin with, the whole project needed to be undertaken from beginning to end (UX validation to Go-Live) in under 6 months. UNE had a large and wide-ranging non-technical editorial team across the organization and high expectations about the functionality of the website. There was also a large range of applications requiring integration as well as LDAP authentication.
All of this was on top of the fact that UNE’s old site had over 100,000 pages as well as 100,000 files!
User Experience
After an expert review of old IA and wireframes, we conducted usability testing, a content strategy audit, and comprehensive review and testing. This made for a website that keeps the user’s needs at the heart of the experience, catering for a range of personas across a swathe of devices.

This award celebrates innovation and creativity in design of a unique user experience in the combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity content for websites. Consideration given to clarity of communication and the matching information style to audience.
