Users were finding the old site difficult to use as locating information required an understanding of the internal working of the organisation. To address these issues and help fulfill the goals of the NSW Small Business Commissioner a site development was undertaken. The new website had to have redesigned information architecture, a fresh new design and project a clear and concise message.
With many small business owners increasingly using their mobile devices to access critical information responsive web design was also a priority.
Project Innovation/Need
The NSW Small Business Commissioner website acts as a repository of documents, forms, media releases, toolkits and other useful business sites that are reviewed maintained and managed in accordance with strict internal policies.
Rather than have multiple resources scattered across the site, there was a need to structure the new site so it employed a logical flow that small business owners can follow to reach the most accurate, up to date information.
We worked with internal Matrix search to implement rich and dynamic search capability of the NSW Small Business Commissioner document repository. Making sure we could put information into the hands of the business owner quickly and easily.
Design Challenge
Responsive design was a critical component of this project - it wasn’t enough that it just looked nice; it had to be intuitive and functional. Small business owners rely on the site whilst they’re away from their desk, and it’s crucial that they can quickly and easily access the exact information they’re looking for.
Future Impact
Internal stakeholders Michael Miller and Mia Lauze acted as strong user advocates continually pushing the needs of the user at every decision point to ensure the site form followed function. The final result for the user, has delivered information that is highly discoverable and accessible to whoever needs it, wherever they are, whatever screen they’re using.
