Project Overview

The Kyron Audio Kronos is an extreme-fidelity music reproduction system. Removing the speaker enclosure has allowed for an increase in sound quality and the ability to create a unique and beautiful form that is in itself an artistic expression.
Kronos integrates the loudspeakers, amplifiers and preamplifiers into a synergistic system to create a plug and play home stereo experience unlike any other for the ears, eyes and soul.

Project Brief

The brief for the Kronos design was to make a loudspeaker system with extreme fidelity and stunning visual appeal that allowed music lovers to integrate high-end audio into their homes and get on with enjoying their music.

Project Innovation/Need

The Kronos system has made many of the latest audio advancements available to customers in one plug and play product. The major contributor to the look and sound of Kronos is the absence of the traditional loudspeaker enclosure.
The intent of the traditional loudspeaker enclosure is to ‘trap’ the sound that is made by the rear of the speaker driver, to avoid cancellations occurring in the bass frequencies. This is never achieved fully in practice and results in the sound leaking out and causing distortion and smearing of the music.
Through our proprietary electronic compensation, Kyron Audio has been able to remove the enclosure completely, while maintaining bass frequencies.
Kronos also incorporates the latest in speaker driver technology, world leading Class D amplifiers, digital to analogue conversion and Digital Signal Processing.

Design Challenge

The Kronos aesthetic is bound in many areas by acoustic and practical necessity. The shape of the front baffle is designed to give the desired audio response, and the rear of the speaker must allow for air to flow unimpeded. Nothing in the structure can resonate or move under the strain of the heavy and powerful speaker motor assemblies. Kronos must look beautiful, being able to blend in or be a highlight in customer’s living spaces.
Kronos integrates the very latest in audio technology from around the globe, yet remains very simple for the user to operate. With all the components required to replay music built into the system, all that the customer requires is to provide a music source, such as a CD or record player, media entre or iPod.

Sustainability

Kronos main function, at which it excels, is to allow for the enjoyment of music. The pace of life and focus on work has, in many lives, left a void in the area of artistic and cultural education and enjoyment. Listening to music as played by Kronos is an uplifting and inspiring experience, allowing an escape from the everyday. Social sustainability is an often underappreciated and ignored area of concern, with the potential to improve the mental health and wellbeing of people when integrated into sustainability planning.
Not everyone has the time or schedule to allow attendance at live music as often as would be preferred. The ability to enjoy an artistic performance in your own living space, to lose yourself completely in music gives the brain a chance to rejuvenate, and releases emotions and feelings often suppressed continually in day to day life.

This award celebrates creative and innovative design for either a component or overall product. Consideration given to aspects that relate to human usage, aesthetics, selection of components and materials, and the resolution of assembly, manufacturing and the overall function.
