Project Brief

For the needs of the 3D concept, adidas combined in a unique way the materials to the production process in order to offer athletes a completely personalized experience. The innovation in the production process brings the running shoes to another level, and ensures unprecedented personalized support and absorption for each leg, so athletes reach peak performance.

Staying true to the philosophy Futercraft for creative cooperation, adidas worked for the realization of Futercraft 3D with Materialise, an innovative company, leader in the 3D printing sector.

Project Innovation/Need

Imagine you walk into a shop adidas, to run for a while on a treadmill and the time to get your hands on a running shoe made with 3D printing technology. This is the ambition of adidas with intermediate 3D-printed insole: the creation of a flexible, accurate athlete fingerprint copy, which will perfectly match the contour and tread pressure points to give him the opportunity to enjoy the better running experience. In combination with the existing data collection technologies and tread scanning, this innovation opens up a new world for direct adjustment of the product in the store room.

"Futurecraft 3D is a prototype and a statement of intent. We have used a one-of-its-kind combination of process and material in an entirely new way. Our 3D-printed midsole not only allows us to make a great running shoe, but also to use performance data to drive truly bespoke experiences, meeting the needs of any athlete." Eric Liedtke, Executive Board Member of adidas AG.
