Project Overview

This concept took shape with the selection of the wooden spoon as the core element and basis of the installation. A rather organic yet functional utensil synonymous with culinary arts, in a kitchen it forms the connection between ‘the chef’ and ‘the dish’.

Project Brief

As the ‘Little Press Club’ has already established a connection to the history of the building, it was equally important to maintain this relationship within the installation. The whole process of a printing press line soon unfolded as being focal to the vision of the overall design and scope of the installation. Wanting a subtle connection between the existing dark tones to the new light tones and materials of the fit-out, the use of ink and newspaper as a finish stood out to be a reflection of the new facelift whilst reinforcing the bond to the buildings’ roots. The basis of the organic tiered geometry used was based on the notion of creating a curved path to a central focal point and hence obtaining the attention of patrons upon entry into the restaurant. The brief highlighted the need to draw patrons from the entry point of the restaurant through to the rear area and hence giving a better sense of the new space.

Project Need

Having recognised the quality of the space, the key element in the concept for us was to establish a clear connection between a restaurant environment and an art installation. Additionally as the ‘Little Press Club’ has already established a connection to the history of the building, it was equally important to maintain this relationship within the installation.

Design Challenge

The major challenge was creating an enticing and innovative concept that married with the alterations that were currently being undergone at the time. A change in internal architecture was taking place along with change in the menu. The design needed to respect both elements. The Little Press Club’s menu is modelled on mezethakia, ‘little snacks’ encouraging a sharing aspect of diverse food. We felt a strong need to highlight and express the aspect of sharing through the two fold geometry of the installation which is imperative and a key element to providing a subconscious link to the whole culinary experience of the patrons.

Sustainability

Products are all sourced locally and opted for sustainable materials where the project allowed.
