Team
The Brightgreen Product Design Team includes several Product Engineers and Industrial Designers who work under the guidance of CEO and Head of Product Design, David O’Driscoll.
Project Brief
The project brief for the new Brightgreen range of wall lights was to create 4 new decorative designs to compliment the company’s existing Curve and Cube series of interior downlights, pendants, spot and track lights.
Preliminary research showed that although many designers use wall lighting for practical purposes like orientation lighting in hallways and staircases; most advanced designers use wall lights for greater aesthetic purposes – like creating the illusion of having a larger spaces by drawing eyes to the edges of rooms or reducing glare by providing multiple light sources.
The Brightgreen Design Team were given free reign to design creatively in order to develop a lighting tool that would allow specifiers to do the same. Emphasis was put on the ability of the product’s form to cast artful shadows on it’s mounting surface in addition to providing ambient illumination.
Project Innovation/Need
The team’s goal was to develop a range of wall lights that would appeal to designers as both a sculptural art piece and a high-quality LED light source.
With the initial brief focused on providing complementary decorative products for the rest of the Brightgreen range, the requirements for the new wall lights evolved to include the ability for designers to rethink their configuration over time.
As the design progressed and the aesthetic became more resolved, the team recognised the need to provide small and large options of both the Curve and Cube designs – providing either 200 or 900 lumens of illumination. This offers a solution for designers looking to mix and match sizes to create artful displays of light, as well as ensuring that specifiers can achieve the correct lux level for their space.
Other key considerations in the design process included adaptability and easy of installation. An audio jack mounting system was designed so that homeowners could safely adapt their design with a simple touch – even when the lights are on.
Design Challenge
The first challenge the Brightgreen design team faced in designing its new range of flexible, Tru-Colour wall lights, was creating a fully adjustable luminaire that could create and shape ambient lighting using its physical form.
After the products form factor was decided upon, the team focused on providing a high level of flexibility that would be simple enough to replicate and standardise across each product using different lumen outputs, shapes and sizes.
The result was achieved by installing the luminaire directly into the wall mount using a linear guide with a universal gimbal. This enables users to adjust the luminaire freely and modify the direction and shape of the beam.
Providing this level of adjustability meant that standard electrical connection methods were not possible. As a result, the design incorporates a cylindrical low-voltage connector that can be rotated indefinitely while the light is turned on without affecting the output.
Sustainability
As part of Brightgreen’s B Corp certification, the company is committed to meeting a higher standard of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. Through the sustainable design of products like the new wall light range, Brightgreen hopes to reduce the carbon footprint of households and commercial spaces worldwide.
Unlike recessed wall lights, each of the Brightgreen surface-mounted wall lights eliminates the need to cut holes in walls and have gaps in insulation. This reduces the amount of conditioned air transferring through the walls and increases overall thermal efficiency.
Made from pure aluminum and designed to last for up to 70,000hrs, each of the Brightgreen wall lights is included in the Brightgreen buy-back recycling scheme.
