Project Overview
London’s 310,000sq ft, seventeen storey Brunel Building is on the banks of the Grand Union Canal and opposite Brunel’s Paddington Station and its remarkable connections; mainline railways, Cross Rail, Heathrow Express the London Underground.

Building upon Derwent and Fletcher Priest’s experience, the architects are developing next generation, innovative work space. Below ground constraints have generated a unique external structure that produces 3.5m high column free space throughout the building amongst other benefits. For instance the shade from the structure allows large windows, giving panoramic views from each floor.
Project Innovation/Need
The structure goes beyond roof level to create glazed wind sheltered gardens at the 15th and 17th floor levels. The building is designed to exceed statutory environmental standards.
Removing a three storey office building that both spans and blocks the edge of the canal allows them to complete the Paddington Basin canalside walkway that will eventually link to London’s Little Venice.
The North Wharf Building reception spaces and restaurants open onto the new south facing public tow path with giant motorized doors.
Architecture - Proposed
This award celebrates the design process and product of planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience that reflect functional, technical, social, and aesthetic considerations. Consideration given for material selection, technology, light and shadow. The project can be a concept, tender or personal project, i.e. proposed space.
