Project Overview

Many of the long buildings, on the old urban area in Taiwan, have constituted a festive place, where most of the old architectures are getting wrecked over time and are in need of renovations. Located in Taichung City, the project is a five-floor house in which a mother and her son are the current residences. The forty-meter long building has been a conundrum for the designer to remodel the originally slender width, who overcomes the difficulties by redesigning the configurations, asked from the client, so that the building is getting more natural lighting.

Project Brief

Different from most of the mansions in which the first floor is mainly reserved for the public area, the building, in this project, is remodeled so that the third floor is designed for the living room, dining room and kitchen, the first and second floor is reserved for the host, and the fourth and fifth floors are prepared for the mother, the design preserving the life styles for each generation while living in the same building.

Project Need

The place at the back of the garage, on the first floor, is where the host writing music. The images of stained and spotted walls, and of old-fashioned furniture, present the history that reappears the unforgettable moments never coming back. The studio and host’s bedroom are built on the second floor, where the design of studio demonstrates irregular space in which the silent atmosphere for music composition is created by black walls and light-colored wooden floor.

Design Challenge

In order to make the building permit more daylight and air, the designer has built up a light well which connects each floor, and an elevator especially for the mother who is too old to walk along stairs.

Sustainability

The public area, on the third floor, creates an industrial style with an air of Zen, by furnishing the space with stone color wall paint, wood brick floor, wall rivets, leather couch, and vintage items. The well-equipped kitchen and light-food bar meet the demand for cooking by mother herself. The upper space, for the mother, in the building presents the consistent simple style by furnishing with white furniture and brown pavements. The hydroponic and woodwork areas, especially for the mother and son, are built on the fifth floor, the design functioning as entertainment.
