Awards Entries

24 Savile Row - Aerium and Terrace Hill Group plc / EPR Architects

Architecture - Commercial - Constructed

- Gold

Following the successful competition in 2012 EPR sought to reference Savile Row’s rich character and culture of tailoring to a corner site by celebrating the arts and crafts heritage of the local area. Early and continued collaboration between EPR Architects and the renowned ceramic artist Kate Malone has resulted in a building adorned with 10,000 artist designed hand glazed ceramic tiles positioned on a sand-cast bronze plinth. The building is a piece of art. The word bespoke was invented in Savile Row, where suits were ‘to be spoken for’ by a specific client. We knew we had to create a bespoke building, featuring material and design quality to echo that tradition and create an artisan building for a special place within London. The existing buildings on the site were a 1960s post war brick and concrete building and a mock Georgian replica built in the 1980s. Both had no positive impact on the Conservation Area and were demolished. The new building consists of basement plus six storeys, containing approximately 42,000 sq/ft of high quality commercial office space and 8,000 sq/ft of retail on the corner of Conduit Street and Savile Row.

London Underground Station Design Idiom - Transport for London

Architecture - Proposed

- Gold

London Underground (LU) has a rich design heritage stretching back over 150 years. It is a defining part of what makes London a leading world city. A pioneering attitude and attention to detail have made its customer environments world renowned, yet there remain inconsistencies in the quality of station environments. In order to achieve an ambition to innovate and inspire customers and staff, the London Underground Station Design Idiom sets the future look and feel of all stations across the Underground's vast and diverse network. LU spent 18 months working with Studio Egret West to develop the Idiom document. This collaborative approach allowed us to bring in outside perspectives, giving us a new direction for the design solutions on the Underground. The final document covers all of London Underground’s 270 stations, with guidelines for how to create ordered, comfortable, accessible stations that are integrated with commercial and community uses – stations that are valued by our customers and staff. It outlines a holistic approach that can be practically applied to any style of station and any size of project, from small-scale patch repairs, to major refurbishments and even brand new stations.

Chiswick Eco Lodge - Private Client / RDA Architects

Architecture - Residential - Constructed

- Gold

The Eco Lodge is a remarkable contemporary three bedroom house, located on a quiet Edwardian Street in Chiswick. The house is bright, light and spacious. The amount of light the unique design brings into the house along with high levels of insulation incorporated into the design mean that no heating input is required. It is one of only 11 Passivhaus certified buildings in London. It’s a striking, bespoke design, made up of clean lines and a mix of warm, natural colours, textures and finishes. The RDA team successfully overcame a number of serious planning issues, over a number of years, to deliver a truly exceptional scheme with which the clients are extremely happy. It was also recently commended for ‘Best One-Off Home or Extension between 2500 and 5000 sq ft’ at the Sunday Times British Homes Awards 2015. The project proves that unlike the majority of ecological buildings which are often unattractive, unique contemporary design can be achieved without compromising on the buildings performance. With the right approach and attention to detail, one can design and build a beautiful, three bedroomed Passivhaus on a tight budget in the heart of London.

There is an urgent need for change. It’s time for a new kind of consultancy. At the end of 2014, four founding members of staff had a groundbreaking model of consultancy in mind. Brand Metabolism - Traffic

Graphic Design - Illustration and Type

- Silver

Strategy has now emerged rightfully as the epicentre of great company and brand success stories. Creative is still important but it takes a back seat to strategy in today’s marketplace. Get the strategy right and the ROI flows in. Get the strategy wrong and you look for a new job or client. Many companies are still using yesterday’s strategic platforms and wondering why the disruption and game changing strategies of their competitors are ripping off their market share and eroding profitability. At Traffic, we specialise in brand transformation and it became increasing obvious with our fifty years of brand creation and re-invention that there had to be a better way of delivering 21st century strategic solutions to a 21st century marketplace. We created Brand Metabolism to set new standards in strategy development.

M&S LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT PROSPECTUS - M&S / Vista

Graphic Design - Publication

- Silver

We used our long-standing relationship with M&S to collaborate and produce a 50-page printed handbook with soft-touch laminate cover given to 300 managers across HR and the business, followed up with an e-version (PDF) that was hosted on their internal portal.

Walk the Tube Map - Transport for London - Transport for London

Graphic Design - Publication

- Gold

Transport for London has released the first official map showing the walking times between central London's Tube stations. The comprehensive plan highlights the time it takes to travel on foot between almost all of the stations on London’s Underground network. Travelliing in the Tube, it's hard to gauge how far you actually travel and whether you are better off walking. This alternate map will tell you just that. Some journeys, such as the one between King’s Cross to Highbury and Islington, take upwards of half an hour on foot. But others, including Mansion House to Cannon Street and Leicester Square to Covent Garden, can be completed by walking for less than five minutes. The map is the first official one of its kind and was released following the popularity of other unofficial versions.

The Design concept is based on a contemporary reinterpretation of the typical Edwardian 2-rooms layout, with one large room at the front and one at the rear, developed through the balanced intersection of 2 opposite ‘L’: The White ‘L’, full height (3,80m) which incorporates within partitions a number of useful wardrobes and cupboards, The Black ‘L’, 2,25m high, which is a multiple functions bespoke furniture that includes: Kitchen, Spirits-bar, CD/DVD storage, TV-furniture, etc.. It is the intersection between these two ‘L’ that generates the element that makes the project unique: a large glazed internal window that gives to the front and rear rooms extraordinary visual depths and continuity, a beautiful view from the master bedroom toward the leafy Nevern Square gardens, and privacy through a dedicated concealed screening system.
