Project Overview

Volvo Cars presents LifePaint. Road safety shouldn't be for the few. It should be for everyone. The ones not driving our cars, and the ones who prefer two wheels to four.

LifePaint is a unique water based reflective safety spray. Invisible by daylight, it glows brightly in direct glare of car headlights. Making the invisible, visible. LifePaint washes off, and will not damage the colour or the surface of your chosen material, lasting more than a week of normal usage.

LifePaint can be used in all sorts of ways. Please note that it works best on textile materials. Applied to clothes, shoes, helmets, pushchairs and children's backpacks - even dog leads and collars.

Project Innovation/Need

Volvo has always taken safety seriously. They invented the three-point seat belt in 1959, then opened up the patent so that any car manufacturer could use it. Now they’re giving away a product to take Volvo safety beyond its cars. Their vision is that no-one should be seriously injured or killed, in or by a new Volvo by 2020. Their Intellisafe system is a product of this vision and it comes as standard in every new Volvo. The system has cyclist and pedestrian detection with auto-brake. It means new Volvo's avoid crashes from happening. Volvo does not only protect the drivers inside their cars, but also the people outside them. Problem: Every year in the UK more than 19.000 people are seriously injured or die in traffic while cycling. 80% of cyclists have a driving licence.

Design Challenge

20% of drivers cycle at least once a month. Volvo drivers index at 185% with our target audience cyclists. The data showed that overall, injury severity is almost three times higher on roads with no or poor lighting. E.g. Lack of visibility was a big problem for cyclists and pedestrians. “Volvo LifePaint” - a spray-on reflective paint for clothes, bikes and accessories - invisible in daylight, stands out in headlights at night. Volvo “LifePaint” launched in the sweet-spot of our desired target audience. Partnering with 6 of the most influential bike shops around the cycling hubs of London with an initial supply of 2000 free cans and a website for catching peoples interest.

This award celebrates creative and innovative design for either a component or overall product. Consideration given to aspects that relate to human usage, aesthetics, selection of components and materials, and the resolution of assembly, manufacturing and the overall function.
