Project Brief
Siren was contracted to design an office that would represent Tongue's culture, client needs and vision. The dilapidated heritage building was upgraded with new timber floors and cleaned up with exposed brick walls and ceilings. This envelope was the ideal setting for the open planning and quirky design. Spread over 3 floors there are a number of contrasting environments have been created to inspire the staff, and represent their energetic working processes.
Project Innovation / Need
From the English phone box entry door leading to the head teacher inspired reception and waiting area, up the birdcage staircase to the enormous completely white presentation room. The first and second floors include an outdoor terrace with a fully operational bar alongside a series of custom designed workstations. The top floor has been finished with the black timer floors and vintage furniture for that "found magic," this area is used for ideas hunting and gathering. Siren also re-designed the bathrooms to incorporate Tongues eccentric personality; the males were designed to represent the inside of a cardboard box!
Design Challenge
The complete fit-out was designed on an incredibly small budget and short timeframe, making the out-come a complete success.
Sustainability
Tongue has a large element of recycled, second hand furniture, fixtures and fittings which add to the “found magic” charm of the space. The workstations were not only unique to the space but also completely sustainable. The workstations were custom designed with minimal use of materials and fixtures. Majority of fittings used in the project were 5 star rated, recycled timber and low VOC paints were used and where possible 5 star rated appliances and white goods were specified.
