Project Brief

Dash Software, LLC, a leading mobile payment platform for restaurants, bars, and clubs, launched in Chicago in Oct. 2014, the company's second city of operation following its November 2013 launch in New York City. Dash has quickly risen in popularity with app-savvy Millennials for transforming the check paying process by allowing diners to pay bar and restaurant tabs directly from their smartphones.

With Dash, diners and bar-goers no longer need to worry about waiting for the check at a busy restaurant, splitting a bill with big groups, or leaving a credit card behind the bar after opening a tab. Fully integrated with the leading POS systems for bars and restaurants, Dash also gives added benefits and customer insights to restaurant and bar owners, allowing them to not only better serve their customers but to also offer up additional perks to increase customer loyalty.

“When we developed Dash, we took the time to ensure value at the merchant level, resulting in a platform that isn't only friendly to patrons to use, but also to operators and their bottom lines,” said McGregor. “POS integration and ease of use are both crucial to merchant success, and Dash’s design and technology makes it as simple as possible for everyone involved in the dining experience.”

The platform currently operates in over 50 popular venues in New York City and 20 venues in Chicago. Dash is available for free download on iOS and Android.

Project Need

Dash Software, LLC's patented, proprietary technology, that allows for their users’ mobile devices to be directly integrated into merchants’ point-of-sales systems, allows for a seamless experience on both sides of the retail transaction. This technology sets Dash apart from other mobile payment competitors. Dash is the only mobile payment app that provides its users an itemized receipt due to the POS integration technology. In addition, this patented technology is allowing the app to develop new features.

Dash recently announced the debut of Venue Vibes, a unique feature that remotely indicates the atmosphere of participating restaurants, bars, and clubs using real-time data. The app, which rose this year to popularity among savvy Millennials, is best known allowing users to view, pay and split tabs from their smartphones.

Venue Vibes provides an accurate gauge of restaurant and bar atmosphere that changes with the ebb and flow of guest volume. By leveraging its patented, proprietary integration technology, Dash continuously tracks how many tabs are open in their venues’ POS (point of sales) systems against the venue's capacity, making real-time data on a venue’s "mood" available to the public for the first time.

Whether guests are seeking a quiet restaurant to host a business meeting or a rowdy happy hour to kick off the weekend, Dash users can use Venue Vibes to select the ideal location for their needs. User Experience

How Dash Works:

When you arrive at a venue that accepts Dash, you simply tell your waiter or bartender that you’d like to “pay with Dash,” at which point your tab is connected to the venue’s POS system, allowing the items you’ve ordered to appear in real-time on your phone.

Friends can invite each other to participate in one Dash bill to facilitate seamless bill splitting. Dash allows guests to easily set a tip using a pre-set percentage or by inputting a specific amount. With one touch, the user is able to pay their bill using a credit card stored within the application.

“Dash is not a mobile ordering app,” said McGregor. “We didn’t want to remove the personal interactions between servers and patrons that make the hospitality industry so special. Instead, the platform simply provides a real time view of your spending when you’re dining out, allowing you to split the bill with friends, easily set a tip without the need to do math, and close your check out at your own discretion.”

Project Marketing

For Dash, product and marketing go hand in hand, so customer engagement plays a massive role. Dash puts a lot of emphasis on providing the right incentives for friend referrals, and galvanizing their top users through loyalty programs. Dash feels strongly that word of mouth is one of the best indicators of a successful product, so creating experience (product or otherwise) that drives this type of communication is really important to the app.

Dash also spends a lot of their marketing resources on developing customized solutions for their merchants. Dash knows that the biggest opportunity to attract new users and drive transactions happens in the actual bars and restaurants in real time. Dash creates an experience that captures new customers, but also benefits the merchant, and helps them with their KPI's which is really important.

Project Privacy

Dash is more secure that traditional credit card transactions at bars and restaurants. The Dash user is not handing over their credit card to a complete stranger, who then walks away with the card for five-plus minutes. Dash is PCI compliant and never transmits user credit card details to the merchant. Dash simply batches out the funds each night for transactions made at their partner venues.
