Project Brief

Welcome to the first and most exciting agriculture-based learning app for kids of all ages! Risk Ranch is a fun, free and fast-paced, single-player education game with engaging, real-life content, challenging you to learn about the economics of agriculture while bringing your steer to market. Avoid risks, allocate your coins wisely and purchase Futures to protect your investment… It’s up to you to safely raise your steer and make a profit on your farm! As you progress throughout the game, you’ll have a chance to play through all four seasons while learning about the real-time risks that affect the value of your steer.

Risk Ranch is based on CME Group and 4–H’s interactive Commodity Carnival game that has toured fairs around the U.S. to educate youth about risk management. Players will experience real-life agricultural risks on the farm and will need to make strategic decisions in order to win the blue ribbon!

Risk Ranch is available on the web, in the App Store and through the Android Market.

Project Need

CME Group and the National 4-H Council are partnering again in 2014 to bring
the Commodity Carnival, a fun learning activity for students to experience
managing the business risks associated with producing and bringing
commodities to market, to 11 Midwestern states.

The game aims to build greater literacy in agricultural science and economics at state and county fairs. In its first year, fairgoers raised a pig for a chance to win a ribbon. This
year, Commodity Carnival players will be guided through two activities that
demonstrate the process of producing and selling a steer. The Commodity Carnival will appear at 120 state and county fairs throughout the Midwest during the summer and fall of 2014.

New this year, the Carnival can be experienced beyond the fairgrounds, as
Commodity Carnival’s “Risk Ranch” app can be downloaded onto desktops
and smartphones.

User Experience

Young Americans can enjoy an interactive, educational fair experience like no other, at over a hundred and twenty state and county fairs around the country this year. State and county fairs have long been a prime destination for food and fun; now, however, kids may be able to learn something at one, as well. That’s because the fairs now feature “risk ranch,” a game that teaches players about managing the risks and costs associated with producing and bringing a steer to the market. It was launched last year by the world’s largest futures exchange, c-m-e group, along with the national four-h council. Fair-goers can visit a commodity carnival to play.
In addition, new this year, kids will be able to play the game beyond fairgrounds, as “risk ranch” is available as a mobile app for android and i-phone.

Project Marketing

Following up on a successful first year, CME Group and National 4-H Council’s Commodity Carnival will again travel to 11 states this summer. The hands-on fair experience will teach state and county fairgoers about the costs and risks involved in bringing agriculture products to the marketplace.

New this year, the Carnival will be available beyond the fairgrounds and in the hands of kids across the U.S. Whether born and raised on the farm or an agriculture novice, everyone will be able to try their hand at the Commodity Carnival’s game – “Risk Ranch” – online and from their mobile devices.

“Risk Ranch” gives fairgoers and online players the chance to try their hand at bringing a steer to market. The risks involved and how they can be managed are the key lessons of the game.
“We are encouraging young people to think about fairs in a new way. Educational experiences like the Commodity Carnival can get their wheels turning about what a future career in agriculture might entail,” says CME Group Executive Chairman and President Terry Duffy.

“The Commodity Carnival really resonates with young people,” said National 4-H Council’s President and CEO Jennifer Sirangelo. “They respect the challenges in getting food from farm to table, and we’re proud to bring this important concept to them in a fun and accessible way,” Sirangelo said.
