Project Overview

UXCam offers a cost-effective way to capture data with real context and visualise it. UXCam SDK runs in the background of an app, capturing screen-recording, camera-recording, gestures,
touch-points and much allowing developers to make informed decisions to improve
the usability of their apps while also reducing their costs.

Organisation

UXCam

Team

UXCam is a tool for developers by developers. Richard, cofounder of UXCam, has been doing commercial development for last 30 years, working at Sony as game developer in the past and more recently as a lead developer at BBC Weather app. He has co-founded and IPO'ed a company.

Kishan has been doing development for last 10 years and had been running a 10 people development agency, which is now working exclusively on UXCam. The development agency has developed apps for Mayor of London during Olympics, UCL, BluebadgeStyle that has been award top 20 best best apps by Guardian.

Daniel is now head of UX at UCL. He is an ex-Apple and has cofounded several companies and sold one to the U.S. government.

Project Brief

Millions of dollars are paid to developers each year, yet only 1% of developers make money while the remaining 99% struggle to figure out why they’re not.The 1% of developers who understand the need for user-testing, and can afford it, perform lab-based UX testing
which is expensive, unscalable and out of context.

By contrast, UXCam offers a cost-effective way to capture data with real context and visualise it. UXCam SDK runs in the background of an app, capturing screen-recording, camera-recording, gestures, touch-points and much allowing developers to make informed decisions to improve the usability of their apps while also reducing their costs.

Project Need

The founding team, Richard and Kishan, were involved with UCL to support their service of providing User experience testing to startups and large-enterprises.

We saw the problems UX designers had trawling around the university asking students to test the apps and the poor results this was giving them. We were able to relate to the issues as we'd had the same problems as app developers. We took the challenge – develop a tool to improve the UX testing experience and improve the quality of results.

Fast-forward a year and we are now able to do UX testing with thousands of users and get insights without having to watch all of the recording

User Experience

UXCam is a tool to help improve User experience. User experience was core part of the product development.

The user(developer) integrates the SDK on their app/website. Integration is very simple. This is done by 2 lines of code that takes less than 2 minutes. After this the developer can control complete settings from the website.

All the data (screen-video, camera-video, touchpoints) are captured in background and sent to server when the app exits. Hence the SDK doesn't cause any performance/network penalty to the app. We have been able to take more than 40 frames per second without any performance penalty.

The user could watch all the session recording. For larger scale user testing, our algorithm analyses the recordings and give you various useful analytics such as show where people quits the app most, so you can get the context by referencing it to the video.

Project Marketing

UXCam is very engaging to its users. The ability to watch how your customers use your product is addictive.

Our marketing strategy includes, outreach at developer events, hackathons, technology press, open source projects, word of mouth.

Project Privacy

We have understood that privacy as a key concern and worked heavily to ensure no confidential is captured and data is transmitted securely. Henceforth:

a) In screen video, the secure information are automatically overlayed and hidden. Furthermore, there is API that allows developer to hide confidential screens.
b) All communications are over SSL.
c) Camera video are turned off by default. Both the developer and the end user need to opt-in each time camera video is accessed.

APIs are fast becoming the scaffolding of the app world. Your entry will be an outstanding API that provides new potential for an App Design. It will provide a better, faster or easier way to integrate and expand functionality. Basically it is the bomb, it knocks the others out of the park. In short - the best in its league.
