Project Overview

MyDrive are world leaders in telematics profiling, delivering the most detailed and accurate driver profiles to their customers in the insurance industry.

MyDrive’s solution was originally based on “black-box” devices which would submit driver telematics data to the MyDrive servers. MyDrive has now expanded its service to support iOS and Android; using smartphone apps to collect and submit data negates the need to install specific devices, and enables insurers to integrate additional features, enhancing engagement with their brand. MyDrive’s SDKs can be used by insurers to create apps, or by Compsoft to develop apps for MyDrive customers.

Team

Compsoft have been specialising in mobile since 2009, having designed and developed web-based applications for many years prior. Compsoft combine stunning interface design with cutting edge development to deliver the best possible app for each customer. Our thirty-strong team lives and breathes mobile - we love nothing more than to apply our passion, creativity, skill and experience to each client’s individual requirement.

Compsoft works closely with MyDrive’s team of developers and client project managers to develop the MyDrive Software Developer Kits (SDKs), as well as bespoke apps for specific customers.

Project Brief

MyDrive are world leaders in telematics profiling; MyDrive’s unique solution enables insurers to fundamentally redefine their assessment of risk. By offering detailed and engaging driver scoring MyDrive clients increase customer interactions and enhance the insurer-customer relationship. The MyDrive solution can therefore help insurers both reduce premiums and improve customer retention.

MyDrive’s clients want the level of contextualised detail on driver behaviour only MyDrive can offer. However they also want to give their customers the convenience of a mobile app, and to incorporate features to make their app more useful and memorable than that of their competitors. By partnering with Compsoft MyDrive was able to combine its industry leading technology with Compsoft’s unrivalled experience of mobile design and development, ensuring customers get the best of both worlds.

Compsoft provides ongoing development of the MyDrive SDKs for iOS and Android, which can be used by customers to create their own apps which integrate with MyDrive’s back-end profiling engine. Recent developments include the creation of an Autostart function, which automatically senses when the user has started driving and starts recording a Trip.

Compsoft also uses the SDKs to develop bespoke apps for MyDrive’s insurance customers, including some of the biggest names in the industry. The SDKs provide the flexibility to create apps which reflect the specific brand of the insurer, the look and feel they want to portray, and to incorporate customer specific features which differentiate the app and promote user interaction with the brand.

Project Need

The MyDrive profiler provides the industry’s most detailed and accurate profile of an individual driver’s ability, via a 5-tiered process that provides granular outputs, enabling insurance clients to build a greater understanding of risk and driver behaviour. This means a more tailored service, lower premiums for many drivers, and increases customer retention. The 5 elements of the process are:

1. Driver location captured on a per second basis.
2. Driver location contextualised against digital road map.
3. Driver performance assessed against various road types and familiarity.
4. Driver performance assessed against Consistency, Anticipation, Calmness, Smoothness and Pace.
5. Driver performance benchmarked against “Expert Driver” scores, produced through an exclusive partnership with the Royal Society For The Prevention of Accidents.

Using apps, rather than black-box devices, provides convenience for drivers and enables insurers to more effectively engage their customers. The MyDrive SDKs enable each insurer to have its own unique look and feel, and to incorporate engaging features which ensure continued app use.

The SDKs also include innovative features like the ability to "Autostart" recording a journey. In order to work effectively Autostart must not only recognize that the user is moving, but also that the device is in a car rather than say walking or on a train. Compsoft has implemented two alternative versions of Autostart; one based on the user’s movement and the other using their proximity to a Bluetooth iBeacon. Both versions utilise background processes and have been architected to ensure minimal battery drain.

User Experience

The MyDrive SDKs have been developed in a completely modular fashion to allow the developer the flexibility to create an app which meets their specific User Experience (UX) requirements. The SDKs allow the developer to implement discrete UI elements, such as list views of journeys or graphically rich views of the user’s profile, and to design their screens however they wish, accessing the app’s functions and features via a suite of public APIs provided in the SDK.

Project Marketing

MyDrive’s marketing strategy is based around promoting the benefits of the granularity of the profiler’s outputs. This granularity allows insurers to tailor their offers to focus on key aspects of driver performance, in-line with their own business objectives.

By identifying specific weaknesses in a driver’s performance, the MyDrive profiler offers clients the ability to deliver improvement advice linked to areas of driving weakness, which can only be recognised due to the granular nature of MyDrive’s outputs. Driver performance can then be monitored to assess response to improvement advice, with advice continuously adjusted in reaction to a driver’s evolving profile. In addition to reducing risk through improvement in general road safety, insurers also demonstrate a duty of care in improving the safety of their customers.

In addition to building an accurate picture of a driver’s performance across all road types and settings, location contextualisation enables insurers to introduce affinity-marketing programs, linking drivers to localised offers and promotions. The flexibility offered by the MyDrive profiler ensures that insurers are able to evolve their proposition in-line with insights gained as the volume of data expands and driver expectations and requirements evolve.

MyDrive’s marketing focuses on generating face-to-face meetings with potential clients via:

• Attendance and networking at all principal international telematics conferences
• Search Engine Optimisation
• Banner-ad campaigns
• Trade press advertising

MyDrive is also investing in improvements to its website, including more mobile-specific content, as well as driver engagement through social media.

Project Privacy

The MyDrive SDKs feature secure registration and login calls in order to facilitate password protected use of each insurer’s app. On registration the user’s credentials are transmitted over an SSL encrypted link to the server. Once verified the login details are stored in encrypted format on device to ensure the app can be used while offline. An app “Heartbeat” regularly checks that the credentials are still valid and enables the user to be locked out by an administrator if required.

All driver details are held in MyDrive’s enterprise-class secure datacentre and are not recorded on the device hard drive (they are stored in memory while in use).
