Project Brief
The design needed to be fun and reflect on Sydney’s urban playful nature. Using a hybrid palette of contemporary and traditional elements which works to capture a multitude of demographics. Whilst engaging a unique use of graphical representation to provide the story of Hudson's Coffee.
Project Innovation/Need
The playful approach to the design makes people feel welcome, after a long international plane flight to see some bright colours (Pink & Blue neon / Girl & Boy theme) says its time to relax & have fun.
The seating allows interactivity and intimacy, within the T1 Airside terminal space for those to casually plug in their laptop, have a quick bite to eat or grab and go.
The visual and operational outcome has been received well from both the client and customers, with the playful lighting and colours attracting people and the customer flow of the store (within this tiny oddly shaped store) works well and feels natural.
Design Challenge
Not been inhibited to celebrate youthfulness & joy through a simple built form expression which makes customers feel that same way. The commissioned artwork connects people to the theme and story.
All this needed to happen within a very small and difficult shaped site and utilized this tight space in both a functional and conceptual way.
working within a new international airport environment is never an easy task, but all worked very hard and got through the long list of requirements and approvals, then followed by a tight fit-out programme. Everyone was very pleased in the end.
Sustainability
We tried to use local and Australian made materials thought the fit-out. The recycled cement sheet flooring & wall panelling, the hand Glazed bricks from Euroa (half way between Albury & Melbourne) the food display was made in Sydney and the wall graphic was a commissioned designed by Alexandra Hotchin.
LED Lighting was a must with lots of concealed strip lighting to ensure the cafes has a great glow.
