Project Overview

Vizamp is a web application that allows users to explore, create and share works of interactive 2D and 3D art. The front end of the platform is built in AngularJS and the back end uses Java and MongoDB. Vizamp integrates music services from SoundCloud to provide an expansive media experience. Vizamp is a brand new platform by Sydney startup Digital Light and Sound. We’re in a phase of rapid growth and change, as we build, learn and iterate on user feedback using Lean methodologies. With projected growth of the platform going into millions of unique visitors over the next 18 months, Vizamp is on track to bring the enjoyment of creating and consuming interactive art to a global audience.

Project Brief

Vizamp lets users explore and create interactive art in the browser.
Music rhythm and tones provide the Vizamp engine with the seed data used to animate fascinating and original animations. Vizamp is a community-driven site where people enjoy interacting over their artistic creations. Popular works get voted up, with more new art added each day. Users source music from the SoundCloud platform, local files or allow Vizamp to listen to music over their device microphone. Vizamp has two main target audiences:
1. The wider audience of internet users that regularly enjoy listening to music on their digital device, whether on their device or via a streaming service. This section of the audience makes up the bulk and is a diverse group predominantly in the 18 to 24 age bracket.
2. The second group is a core of creative individuals that enjoy making visual artistic creations and sharing them with the world. This group is made up of tech savvy males with the 25 to 34 age bracket being slightly larger than the 18 to 24. This group - while only making up 17% of overall traffic - is responsible for generating most of the content on the platform.

Project Need

With the rapid growth in digital image creation and ability to transmit images, users increasingly turn to the visual medium to express themselves. We’ve identified the the increasingly sophisticated abilities of modern web browsers as an enabler of a platform that fills this growth niche. Increasingly we see companies such as Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook hone in on applications that enable users to create and share rich media compositions. These technologies are far more than mere novelties; they allow users to leverage new technology to be more creative in their communication. While we may be seeing an influx of cat faces and zombie brains on Snapchat today, tomorrow we see users sending thoughtful and artistic multimedia compositions to one another. We see Vizamp as being positioned at the forefront of this evolution in technology by giving our users an unmatched set of tools in which to express themselves digitally.

User Experience

At Vizamp we take pride in the user experience. From the moment the user enters the site they are greeted with a minimalist experience that belies the sophisticated technology underneath. Users are invited to browse through animations and add music to accompany the visuals. We allow the natural inquisitiveness of some users to be rewarded with deeper layers of functionality into artwork creation. Users can also interact and manipulate artwork using mouse and keyboard shortcuts. Users are able to manipulate light and colour in real time to their favourite music. We envisage this giving rise to a new type of live visual performance art and have witnessed users in testing, be emphatically delighted by their new found ability. Vizamp’s user experience focus, above any other principle, is key to our mission statement; “Unlocking the creative potential of our users”.

Project Marketing

On the Vizamp platform everything is in the cloud, accessible on 99% of devices; phones/tablets, computers, smart TVs or gaming devices. Modern sophisticated browsers don’t compromise the product experience being online gives us a huge surface area and no barrier to entry for new users approaching the platform. Our marketing strategy puts our users at the center. Seeing their friends post Vizamp creations on social media, users are compelled to visit the site and create their own animations to share back out to the world. All of this is facilitated by Vizamp in-app and we work with US companies Embedly and iFramely to provide an embedded media player which works with popular content distribution channels such as Facebook, Twitter and Reddit. This makes Vizamp playable on other platforms and allows to push marketing material and provides an avenue new users back to the our platform, converting viewers into active participating users. Using Amazon’s highly scalable CloudFront technology, we're able to take advantage of surges in traffic when popular content is widely distributed. Vizamp aims to penetrate further into existing markets spearheaded by platforms like Instagram and Snapchat while also defining a unique creative niche with its core users.
