Project Innovation/Need

I wanted to create a platform that enabled people to easily track and understand their emotional lives via a simple iPhone app.

I also thought it would be an interesting experiment for people to be able to see how their Expereal ratings compared to their friends and the world at large.

Design Challenge

The design challenge was to allow people to clearly see a benefit for continuing to enter in their data on an ongoing basis.

I think that this issue might be summarized as the "engagement challenge."

User Experience

I knew that user engagement would be an issue, as there's a tremendous chasm in the app world between a curiosity and something that truly provides utility. I thought that people would find the inspiration (Daniel Kahneman's book "Thinking, Fast and Slow", and the aesthetic interesting; I was less sure about is if thousands of people would want to use it.

While thousands of people have tried it, I made a fundamental mistake: I only offered Facebook login. While a user's Expereal ratings would not be shared with Facebook, many expressed concern that it would be. There was no arguing against this belief, and it impacted trial.
