Project Innovation/Need

As a simple homage to my adopted hometown of New York I decided to illustrate letters inspired by the sidewalk name painters in Chinatown. These letter forms are almost ubiquitous in our day to day lives when walking around the streets of many major cities however I have never seen them translated and refined to the digital realm.

Design Challenge

The challenge here was to take from the letterforms I've seen on the street and translate them into a digital usage. Finding the correct painting materials to illustrate these by hand then digitize them was the technical challenge of this project but expressing the attitude of these letters from paper to a screen was the real design challenge.

Effectiveness

The typeface is now available to the public via the Notegraphy App, it has been used by thousands to generate message to send to friends, share via social network, etc.
