Project Overview

OLPC’s vision is that by empowering poor children to educate themselves, a new generation will ultimately be better prepared to tackle the other serious problems facing their societies. Sixty countries and three million children, many refugees and orphans, have benefited from this nonprofit organization. That is just the beginning - laptop and tablet deployments are ongoing as OLPC continues to work with governments and NGO’s throughout the world to put connected technology in the hands of children. The One Laptop per Child project has become a model for providing disadvantaged children worldwide with the opportunity for education, a window to the outside world, a way to connect with each other, and a springboard to a brighter future.

Project Brief

OLPC is making a difference. Since its origin in 2005, research shows gains in children’s reading and comprehension, math and science, and school enrollment. Uruguay, the only country to implement a nationwide OLPC project, has experienced decreased levels of school violence and increased school registration and attendance rates.

How OLPC Began: One Individual’s Idea to Help Children Worldwide
OLPC begin in 2005 when Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab, began that mission to provide every child in the world with the opportunity for education. Thus, a most unique XO Laptop was created, empowering millions of children.

Project Innovation/Need

The XO Tablet: The Most Flexible OLPC Tool To-Date
There is anecdotal and empirical evidence to suggest that the intuitive nature of touchscreen technology makes connected tablets an ideal learning tool for children. Against that background, OLPC designed and developed the XO Tablet, the only multilingual (English/Spanish) and Google-Certified tablet for kids and their families. Centered on the XO Learning system and expertly curated educational content, the XO Tablet provides children with the opportunity to dream, build and learn.

Design Challenge

The XO Tablet is designed by Yves Behar and the Fuse Project team.
The challenge is to use design as the glue between education and technology. Use design to be accepted by all cultures with no limitation. Use colors that are worldwide accepted.

Sustainability

The XO Tablet has content preloaded free of charge for above $350 market value.
The XO Tablet can be shared among several kids and within the whole family.
