BQ Green - St. Nicks Alliance / dlandstudio architecture and landscape architecture pllc

Urban Design

- Winner

The Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE) was originally proposed by the Regional Plan Association in the mid-1930s to mitigate traffic congestion, facilitate industrial development and strengthen the connection between the boroughs of New York City. However, its construction left a trail of divided neighborhoods in its wake. dlandstudio developed BQGREEN to reconnect neighborhoods divided by construction of the BQE. The design caps two blocks of the trench in Southside Williamsburg Brooklyn to provide playing fields and verdant, flexible open space for the neighborhood, while simultaneously reducing many of the negative environmental, economic and social impacts of the highway artery. With this proposal, the BQE is reconceived as an environmentally and ecologically productive spine that introduces new recreation spaces, ecological strategies, and infrastructural improvements that enhance the urban performance of the trench while transforming it into a true public amenity.

Architecture - Proposed

Finalist

The New York Wheel is proposed as a key component of a new destination district on Staten Island. The project is intended to transform the currently underused waterfront area around Staten Island's ferry terminal into a dynamic, mixed-use district, and provide a new iconic element on New York Harbor. The Observation Wheel project anticipates a new and compelling integrated waterfront site to attract both tourists and residents of all ages for a unique experience that includes retail, entertainment, restaurants and open space amenities, and most importantly an up-close experience of the Wheel. The Wheel itself promises to be an important new component of the extended city skyline, and is the centerpiece of our site. While the observation wheel will use tested and proven technology, with a 600' diameter it will be the world's largest. The other program components of the project, including a 950 car parking garage, a bus storage facility, a 100,000 sf terminal building, and an extensive landscape and sustainability program will be designed to provide new, high quality universally accessible public space that complements the wheel while reinforcing its role as the marquee of the Staten Island waterfront and the harbor.

Smartstreets-Cyclepark™: Transformational bike parking - Smartstreets Ltd

Product Design - Active Life

- Winner

Cities, campuses and other shared spaces often experience problems with random, unauthorized bicycle parking and bicycle theft. Cyclists will seek to lock their bike as close as possible to a destination and will use a sign post, railing or lamp post in the absence of official bike parking facilities. This can create problems with chained bikes being lifted off the top of short sign posts and bicycles blowing or loosely secured bicycles being knocked over to create trip hazards. The Smartstreets-Cyclepark design quickly improves official bike parking opportunities across cities and campuses without adding clutter, by transforming existing sign posts and lamp posts in a matter of minutes into secure bike parking for two bicycles. This makes streets safer, reduces bike theft and improves civic pride by helping Councils and Municipalities encourage cycling and keep streets looking well organized with greater provision for bike parking, even on narrow streets where traditional bike parking stands would take up too much room.

How do you do more with less in a small space? Seriously small. It’s a common question these days and one I tackled in a 30 square foot space for a client. Given a modest dining alcove area in a Manhattan brownstone, I was inspired by my client to create a Japanese jewel box effect with flexible furnishings that allow Eastern style seating on the floor, Western style seating, and buffet/standing room options for hosting larger groups. The room's concept started a domino effect that set the tone for the rest of the home's rooms, but it could also be effectively scaled up for commercial applications.

FLIR ONE™ is the first personal thermal imaging device to target mobile phone users. Designed specifically for the iPhone 5 and 5s, this sleek, lightweight chassis gives users the ability to detect and display a thermal world normally invisible to the unaided eye. Every object or living thing emits or reflects heat (infrared) energy. The revolutionary micro thermal camera built into FLIR ONE has a resolution of 80 x 60 pixels and can detect infrared energy up to a distance of 100 meters. FLIR ONE unlocks a host of practical applications for the consumer—from detecting energy leaks at home to scanning a dark sidewalk for personal safety. FLIR ONE also allows users to observe precise temperature differences to a fraction of a degree. Since visible light doesn’t affect the thermal world, FLIR ONE works the same in highly lit or totally dark environments—the thermal image is the same. Consumers can record live thermal images and video, and the free FLIR ONE MX APP makes it easy to share compelling images on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media channels. FLIR ONE will be available in late spring 2014 for a suggested retail price of $349 (USD).

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Headquarters - Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide / HOK

Interior Design - Corporate or Hospitality

Finalist

Starwood Hotels and Resorts retained our firm to create comprehensive new workplace standards and a detailed space program for their headquarters facility in Stamford, Connecticut. Asked to focus on collaboration and flexibility, we helped Starwood establish a vision for their ‘Workplace of the Future’ that reconceptualized their space and work methodology. In addition to the new workspace, our design for the headquarters included model rooms for the Starwood brands, design studios to work with franchisees in developing concepts, and executive offices and a conference center. Our goal was to create a welcoming environment for visitors and brand executives that projects Starwood’s company values while still capturing their distinct brands, like the W Hotel, St. Regis, Sheraton, and more. Through the creative use of lighting, material finishes, and graphic elements, our design captures the signature look and feel of each brand to create places in which the company may develop, refine and test new concepts to keep the Starwood brands in the forefront of hotel design.

Aegis Media New York Offices - Aegis Media North America / HOK

Interior Design - Corporate or Hospitality

Finalist

Aegis Media, a creative communications company, asked our firm to renovate their existing New York offices and create a modern, dynamic space that reflects both the energy and spirit of their company, while also responding to their expansive growth. Working within the physical constraints of the existing, multi-floor space, including low ceilings and disjointed rooms, we created a cohesive design language that encourages high collaboration and fosters a sense of community. We developed flexible layouts with Aegis’s new company-wide standards for workstations and offices, which are more efficient and now tailored to reinforce the company’s creative work style. A central gathering space anchors the two floors and serves as a hub to receive clients, conduct social events and allow employees a change of venue from their desks. Aesthetically, we kept wall treatments and other finishes neutral like a gallery to allow the Aegis teams to seamlessly showcase and cycle graphic works within their spaces. Branding applications throughout the office bring in splashes of color and are easily changed as groups relocate within the space, supporting Aegis and its family of companies.

Roadie Tuner - Band Industries

Roadie Tuner is the ultimate guitarist's tool — an automated robotic guitar tuner that is both quick and easy to use, and three times more accurate than the human ear. Complemented by a mobile app, this hand-held tuner adds new dimensions to music-making by allowing musicians to freely experiment and save alternate, custom tunings. Roadie is also the first device capable of tracking the quality of an instrument's strings, notifying musicians when strings are about to snap and need replacing. Our Kickstarter campaign tripled its funding goal last year, raising approximately $180,000. Roadie Tuner was named Audience Choice winner at this month's TechCrunch Disrupt conference in New York.

Arnold Worldwide - TPG Architecture

Interior Design - Corporate or Hospitality

A new office can represent many things: a fresh start, a new look, and also an opportunity to redefine a firm’s very way of working. This is the case for Arnold Worldwide, a global advertising firm founded in Boston and now part of the Havas Creative Group. Arnold retained TPG to design its new Manhattan workspace at 205 Hudson Street as part of a larger relocation to Hudson Square for several Havas companies. All Arnold staff now work in bench style stations in a totally open plan. TPG designed the new 31,000SF office to both embrace this open and collaborative style of work while supplying the requisite support spaces to make benching truly successful for the staff regardless of their job function.
