Project Brief

We jumped at the chance to create giant oversized pencils for kikki.K who has a proven track record for head turning windows. Of course pencils this big needed oversized paper for us to work out how we were going to produce 2 dozen giant pencils for kikki.K’s new world-first concept store at Chadstone Shopping Centre. Keeping true to their strong brand and making sure OH&S wasn't breached meant that we needed to think outside the 'giant pencil' so to speak. In the end we were able to tick ‘giant pencils’ off the bucket list, all thanks to kikki.K.

Project Innovation/Need

Our approach to this brief had its basis in construction and employment first and foremost. We designed a modular pencil with a removal wooden tip, knowing they would need to be packed for safe transport. The wooden tip itself is the hero which has the tactile qualities of the brand, as well as a few weird looks from our joinery partner when briefed. Our favourite part was dipping the wooden tips into the paint, very realistic!

Design Challenge

Certainly materials, lots of testing on different substrates before realising that basic PVC pipes were not only perfect for apply self-adhesive vinyl, but also has a myriad of attachments to ensure they stood securely with the tallest pencil standing 2000mm. To do this while not damaging any of the custom plinths and fittings in the window itself was another challenge all together.

Effectiveness

kikki.K was extremely happy with the end result and worked very well together to deliver this in 4 weeks. So happy in fact that the pencils were then flown first class to London for the grand opening of the brand’s very first ‘Hej London’ pop-up store. They are now scattered throughout their stores and stand proudly at their HQ. The pencils have travelled so much they now have their own passports!
