Project Overview

Mapping out a career path can be a daunting process. Putting all the pieces of the puzzle together – from working out what you want to do, to finding out how to get there, and then actually landing a job – can feel overwhelming. It can also be extremely time-consuming. The AusAppPathways app is a centralised information source that vastly simplifies the task of making your future career a reality.

Project Brief

ITA (Industry Training Australia) is a government-funded organisation whose primary objective is to increase awareness of apprenticeship and traineeship options. Its target audiences are prospective students and careers advisors. ITA wanted to develop a mobile-friendly tool to assist students in finding the information they need to get them started on their career journey. In response to this broad brief, digital agency Get Started suggested the development of an app that would leverage the existing back end of the client's Kentico website, to create a custom API wrapped in advanced technologies that would deliver the content as a web app.

The app needed to:
- streamline the student journey from the point of working out the right career, to determining which courses, apprenticeships or traineeships are available to them
- provide an exceptional user experience on mobile devices
- be available for both Apple and Android devices, and
- strip down the website content to only material that is relevant to the student journey.

Project Need

The AusAppPathways app has effectively revolutionised the way prospective trainees and apprentices seek and gather information on possible career/study options. Rather than having to rely on many different sources, they can now find everything they need through one simple, streamlined, mobile-friendly tool.

User Experience

The most significant improvement in terms of user experience is that students are now able to find all the information they need through a mobile device. In addition, the user journey has been greatly simplified. Instead of having many different pathways and menu options to bring them to the same destination, the user is taken on a simple journey where flexible filtering options help them eliminate information that is not relevant. Users can also easily toggle the filtering to see how changing one aspect (such as location) might change the results presented. For example, a user could easily toggle between applicable study options available in Victoria or NSW.

Users can can also shortcut the pathway to their destination by performing a direct search. For example, if you know you want to be an automotive electrician, you could skip the fields designed to help you work out which career is right for you and go straight into training options.

Another aspect of the app that has been significantly simplified relative to the website is the job detail pages. Features such as sidebars and abstract buttons have been removed in favour of a more linear and mobile-friendly layout.

Project Marketing

As well as designing the app itself, Get Started also created banner ads to be used across industry print publications and websites to advertise the app. Word-of-mouth has also been an extremely effective marketing channel to drive new users to the app. This has included networking by ITA representatives at industry events and also career advisors recommending the app to students and clients.

Project Privacy

ITA is committed to protecting the privacy of all users when handling personal information collected for the purpose of its service. Any personal information provided through the app will be stored securely and will be held only to help fulfill the purpose for which it was collected. Personal information will not be sold or traded to any third party, organisation or individual without the user’s consent, other than as requested by a law enforcement agency in relation to a suspected breach of law.
