Project Overview
Domain Group, a Fairfax Media company, is one of Australia’s leading real estate destinations offering an integrated multi-platform solution that spans online, print and mobile for the real estate industry, as well as home buyers, investors, sellers and renters. The Melbourne office is predominately editorial, finance and sales. As one of Australia’s most innovative and fastest growing companies, in order to stay at the forefront of industry trends, Domain needs to bring new products and services into the marketplace quickly. To achieve this Domain needed a work environment that was agile and enabled teams to come together in various capacities to collaborate at speed.

Project Brief
Artillery’s brief was to create a space that encourages collaboration between teams and establishes an integrated culture within the Domain workplace. Domain needed to facilitate an agile office environment where many people from across various teams could interact together in projects and collaborate in a visual and open environment. Flexibility was also required for open and closed conversations along with spaces for creative thinking and client entertaining. A variety of options for connectivity was deemed paramount.
Project Innovation/Need
Artillery provided a solution to the need for a variety of spaces through clever planning and a diversity of space, marked by sculptural elements. Angled walls, irregular shaped furniture and ‘ribbon like’ creative zones are key – giving the space a distinctly contemporary edge.
The space was designed to be a visual statement of the brand, striking a balance between commercial and residential, reflecting the clients they represent.
A palette of blonde, muted greys and blues established a calming atmosphere and timeless aesthetic, whilst a home-like environment is referenced with relaxed furniture, feature lighting and soft furnishings.
Design Challenge
Artillery's design challenge was succinct; to provide Domain with a work environment that enabled them to build solutions through an agile environment and take them to market quickly.
Limitations with the ceiling and the desire for natural light, created a need for walls to be lower. This was the origin to the idea of the ‘hut’ meeting room – a subtle reference to the real estate market.
Sustainability
We are socially and sustainably focussed. Artillery SEED
(Social Equitable Environmental Design) finds its way into
all our projects.
As a matter of course, we design our architectural scope
in accordance with the principles established by the GBCA
(parallel to a rating of Green Star Best Practice).
This involves:
——Management: Operational waste (e.g. recycling bin
locations as a part of the design)
——Materials: Responsible and sustainable material,
finishes, furniture and equipment selection and use e.g.
local product, life cycle analysis etc
——Energy: energy efficient appliances
——Water: water efficient appliances
——Indoor Environment Quality: Low VOC and 0
formaldehyde material selection and plants (indoor
pollutants and indoor air quality), ergonomics, visual
comfort e.g. blinds and designing floor plans which
enhance the Indoor Environment Quality (access to
views, natural light etc)
Wellness is linked to Artillery’s SEED and the way we
design for human well being. It is also integral to the way
we design and is developed in our Focus Groups at the
start of our design process.
