Project Overview

FINDIT.ID is a tech start-up that has developed a unique tagging technology that can link any personal belongings with their owner, and helps reconnect owners with their lost goods.

FINDIT.ID and Butterfly worked from a blank slate to create a smooth new service application, designing brand, product, website and management system. The tagging technology is flexible and can be applied to consumer goods via wholesale and retail channels. Manufacturers can print the tag on their products using laser technology and consumers can tag their personal items by purchasing sticker kits from local retail outlets.

FINDIT.ID facilitates a safe, efficient and low stress method for returning lost goods directly from finders back to owners through the FINDIT.ID message centre. The patent was submitted on May 4 2015 in Australia. A patent has also been filed in the US. Telstra retail outlets are now selling this product, and the technology has received strong support from local sporting manufacturers and one manufacturer of high-school clothing.

FINDIT.ID has proved a challenging and exciting project for the team, providing the opportunity to design a clear and innovative platform.

Project Brief

Our brief was to help a new tech start-up develop its brand from the ground up. For this, we needed product design, system design and a web app and front end that reflected its unique innovation, all the while being flexible enough to withstand its evolution.

Every year more than 200,000 mobile phones are reported lost or stolen. This is an equivalent of one mobile every 3 minutes, as well as billions of dollars worth of personal items misplaced each year. Through FINDIT.ID these items can be registered on a central database by individual consumers via a website. People who find these items when lost, are able to easily connect to the item owner, and the item can then be returned. The website has facilitated this new service making this process accessible and easy.

Creating a brand was the first stage, the second stage was the system build, then came the website. The website design had to provide a simple way for people to quickly and easily connect through the ID, as well as clearly explain the product and show its simplicity.

FINDIT.ID aspires to be the ethical standard to return lost items to owners. To help people recover their items, FINDIT.ID has developed a tagging technology that can be applied to consumer goods through both wholesale and retail channels.

Project Need

Butterfly loves working with start-ups and being able to serve as a mentor, as well as apply its design and strategy experience to their business challenges.

Beginning with the brand, the solution was a bold word mark framed by positive and negative space. Enclosing the words with this treatment allows the word '.ID' to stand out, linking back to the core function - retrieving items through unique ID codes. Once we established the look and feel, we then moved onto the custom development required for managing a database of ID codes. A message centre was developed from scratch to facilitate the communication directly between finders and owners.

From there we have been meticulous and attentive in designing the overall experience spanning across:
- Corporate stationery
- Digital
- Product design
- Packaging
- Store displays
- Marketing collateral

User Experience

The simple structure of the website, combined with the innovative and modern features, makes it the perfect portal for the modern day lost and found. It welcomes those who have lost, and those who have found, and clearly shows them how to connect. The website is designed to allow users to easily identify themselves, and see their role within the journey. The website involves a smooth scroll down example on ‘how it works’, with each step producing a new background image, simple text description and smart iconography to show the steps.

It provides a youthful nature in the playful bold colours, the design means it's relatable, approachable. The website is clear and smooth, innovative and fun, but also makes the user journey obvious.

Butterfly and FINDIT.ID road tested the entire UX during development and provided valuable user testing to improve the overall customer and online experience. Plus, we got free IDs!

Feedback so far has been that the system is incredibly easy to use. A sizable amount of investors are knocking on the door, including the rollout of the product to Telstra retail outlets- quite an impressive feat for a humble start up!

Project Marketing

FINDIT.ID is the 'new kid on the block', stirring up interest with with consumer groups all around Australia. It is currently being promoted in Telstra retail outlets across Australia and proving very popular with customers, and this growing momentum is set to continue throughout 2016 with a number of other significant partnerships in the works. You can now see FINDIT.ID popping up on billboards around town, so keep an eye out for these too!

One of the most exciting parts about this venture is that it's never finished. FINDIT.ID is continuously evolving, responding to feedback, taking risks and being creative. We hope that their idea inspires people to do good and proves that quality humans do exist!

This can be any new service or application from a start-up to an industry leader. It’s not just bells and whistles we're after but true innovation, exceeding expectations and filling a void that had previously been open.
