Arbory Bar and Eatery - HQ Group / Jackson Clements Burrows Architects

Architecture - Commercial - Constructed

- Gold

A previously unused sliver of railway land adjacent to Flinders Street Station has been creatively transformed into a unique outdoor food and beverage venue, Arbory Bar & Eatery. The design skilfully addresses all operational requirements for a large-scale, high volume, inner-city hospitality establishment. Kitchens, bars and back of house areas are contained within a minimalist architectural form constructed of timber and polycarbonate which responds in an abstract manner to the linear nature of the rail lines, platforms and river. While Arbory is sympathetic to the surrounding heritage context, it also redefines Melbourne’s CBD connection to the Yarra’s North Bank.

Docklands Surf Park - Damian Rogers Architecture

Architecture - Proposed

- Gold

The idea was birthed from the desire to re-inhabit our city in a new and exciting way. What if you could surf in the city? At its core it’s a surfable wave in the heart of the city of Melbourne. We hope to make surfing part of everyday life in Melbourne, so people can get on a tram and walk to a surfable wave. It becomes another public park in the city. This is a way for Melbourne to embrace the water in ways that it hasn’t previously been able to. It’s over an hour to get down to the coast where we can surf, so it makes surfing more accessible for people who live in the city. The new floating Surf Park is situated at the end of Central Pier, an existing heritage listed pier and warehouses. The development would also include a large sandy beach, with an expansive lawn topping an amenities pavilions which includes retail space and change rooms. Decking surrounds the perimeter of the pool allowing for people to watch the activity.

Premier's Sustainability Awards 2014 - Sustainability Victoria / Immediacy

Event Experience

- Silver

The Premier’s Sustainability Awards celebrate Victoria’s commitment to sustainability by recognising outstanding achievements by Victorian businesses, organisations, community groups, government and individuals who are leading the way in sustainable innovation and practices. The event design needed to convey key messages, utilise a strong graphic design to work across all facets of the event and provide an audience experience that was celebratory, vibrant and prestigious. The event was designed around the integration of our circular economy theme: ‘Making Connections, Building Resilience’ as the positioning line and spirographic imagery in the graphic design. Our rationale came from the current thinking in the environmental community of frequency, intensity and building resilience into our practices. The subtext is that as we move to eliminate the linear ‘take-make-dispose’ mind-set, the circular economy comes into sharp focus. The spirograph imagery conveyed connectivity through varying degrees of frequency and intensity of the line work and was applied to the event touch-points. These included Finalist display boards, scripting, an animated opener and screen package, lighting and music design, and a stunning performance by Katie Noonan. The result was a high quality event that acknowledged both finalists and winners who have shown leadership in sustainability.

The Creamery at Two Rivers - Clayton Andrews / Goldeneye Media

Film, Video, Viral

- Gold

We would consider our campaign for The Creamery at Two Rivers as one of our most successful ever. Not because how many people saw it, but how few. Because the film we made did exactly what it was designed to do. It made someone fall in love. Within a few days of being completed, and before almost anyone even knew this legacy property was coming to the market, this film was shared with a family who the agent knew might be interested. They were so inspired by what they saw and heard that they made a breathtaking offer, but on one condition – that the film not be shown to anyone else until the sale had closed, for fear it would inspire someone else to make the same kind of head over heels in love offer that they did. Hence, our beautiful film and our exquisite website remained a secret while the details of this market changing sale were finalised. And finally, after two months, contracts were exchanged and signed, and we were allowed to celebrate the greatest campaign we ever launched!

But with challenge comes opportunity. There is still much good will and trust afforded the Australia Post brand. And its physical network (over 4,400 Post Offices) and ‘last mile’ delivery capabilities (more than 11.3 million addresses across the country) remain competitive strengths. Importantly, Australia Post’s digital capabilities are also continuing to grow, as evidenced by over 2M registered users, and 111M visitors to its digital platforms last year. Our goal was to break down the boundaries of traditional ‘clinical’ optometry by featuring the procedural equipment in a warm and inviting environment. This was achieved by creating an inviting atmosphere with complete transparency.

108 Flinders Street Melbourne - Riverlee Pty Ltd / Tract Consultants Pty Ltd

Landscape Design

- Silver

The concept for this totally synthetic landscape arose as a whimsical response to a set of restrictive functional issues. While this space provides the residents of the surrounding apartments with an outlook and natural light, the proportions bring with it a curtailed sense of privacy, with limited access for the maintenance of a living landscape.

Marketing - Branded Experience

- Silver

Early in 2015, Next Marketing teamed up with oyster wholesaler Signature Oysters to launch their new brand. Signature Oysters is challenging and changing the way that oysters are marketed in Australia through sending profits back to the farmers. Signature Oysters have a unique business model that brings together the best oyster farmers from all the growing regions around Australia and forms a single point of contact for hotels, bars and restaurants. Hospitality venues that want to serve premium oysters all year round have in the past found it difficult to get a consistent supply of high quality oysters through the traditional / volume wholesale model. As well as convenience, Signature Oysters has a strong emphasis on quality. Signature Oysters are judged to the Royal Agriculture Society’s standards meaning that only the freshest and finest are used. By bringing quality oysters direct from the farm to the plate and sending profits back to farmers, Signature Oysters has challenged the industry status quo, and is revolutionising the seafood industry through great design and marketing.

The precinct has long suffered from crime and public safety issues, and more broadly, economic and social under-performance. This project demonstrates how creative and collaborative tactics can address these pressing issues. The premise of this initiative was to deal with the issue of crime by creating a public place to attract and retain people; change the dynamic of the precinct, improve public safety, spur economic activity and stimulate precinct-wide urban regeneration. The project was delivered using a “placemaking” approach.
