Project Overview

The Premier’s Sustainability Awards celebrate Victoria’s commitment to sustainability by recognising outstanding achievements by Victorian businesses, organisations, community groups, government and individuals who are leading the way in sustainable innovation and practices.

The event design needed to convey key messages, utilise a strong graphic design to work across all facets of the event and provide an audience experience that was celebratory, vibrant and prestigious.

The event was designed around the integration of our circular economy theme: ‘Making Connections, Building Resilience’ as the positioning line and spirographic imagery in the graphic design.

Our rationale came from the current thinking in the environmental community of frequency, intensity and building resilience into our practices. The subtext is that as we move to eliminate the linear ‘take-make-dispose’ mind-set, the circular economy comes into sharp focus. The spirograph imagery conveyed connectivity through varying degrees of frequency and intensity of the line work and was applied to the event touch-points.

These included Finalist display boards, scripting, an animated opener and screen package, lighting and music design, and a stunning performance by Katie Noonan.

The result was a high quality event that acknowledged both finalists and winners who have shown leadership in sustainability.

Project Brief

The objective was to build on the success of previous Premier’s Sustainability Awards Gala events by:

- Using strong messaging and customised design to powerfully engage with the audience
- Introducing new initiatives to cater for the ‘regular’ attendees of the Gala
- Detailing innovations in a succinct way, highlighting how the initiatives are transferable
- Acknowledging both finalists and winners who have shown sector leadership

This was achieved through a seamless, enjoyable and high quality production
The key elements of the spirographic iconography, strong colourways and the typography was fully integrated at the event. Starting in the pre-dinner reception space right throughout the presentations and room environment the experience was consistently and elegantly themed.

By using a widescreen projection screen, the animated opener and Keynote carried the design and contributed to the room look. Customised lighting, upbeat music stings and live voice over announcements about the achievements of the Finalists kept the energy elevated.

The best of Victoria’s produce and wine combined with a great line up of talent including a pre-dinner jazz band, Catriona Rowntree as MC and a guest spot by Katie Noonan keeping the audience experience in mind at all times.

Project Innovation/Need

Exceptional design contributes to the success of any event. Technical excellence and a smooth-running event should be a given yet the development of an insightful theme and creative execution should be the objective for every event manager. This ensures targeted communication and the invaluable recalling of the key messages.

The management of the Gala focused on a creative and elegant design that was thoughtful and relevant to a sophisticated audience and the overarching theme of sustainability. It was easy to apply across the event elements and was able to be built into the communication leveraged at the event and in social media and PR activities.

Given this is the premier event in the sustainability sector, there was a conscious decision about every facet to ensure sustainable measures were applied from the reduction of waste and the sourcing of local product and materials that can be recycled or re-used in various forms.

User Experience

The approach to the event design and the injection of the strong theme and graphic design combined to a totally immersive and consistent audience experience.

The tightly delivered technical excellence provided a seamless platform for the achievements of the Finalists and winners who have shown leadership in sustainability to be acknowledged.

The main objective was that all of these elements contributed to a successful event to a standard that contributed to the good reputation of Sustainability Victoria and the Victorian Government. There was positive feedback from a large majority of the audience and sponsors, increasing the prestige of the Awards and creating further momentum for the Awards program for the next year.

Sustainability

We observed sustainable practices such as sourcing materials ethically and considering the lifecycle of products through purchase and recycling. For example the program and Finalist profile boards were printed on recyclable material and the table centre-pieces were living plants that were given away to the guests to be cared for in pots or planted in a garden.

The selection of venue was important to ensure it was centrally located and adhered to sustainability principles so we could work with them to source local food and wine.

In terms of economic sustainability, the venue and all suppliers needed to comply with health and safety requirements and adhere to safe working ethics and WorkSafe practices.

Immediacy needed to identify and manage risks to maintain the reputation of the event and deliver sponsors’ event-related benefits at the event.
