Project Brief

NGV have approached Carter Digital in order to utilise their user experience (UX) design and development expertise to conceptualise and develop a new microsite and iOS and Android Smartphone Applications for the upcoming Melbourne Now exhibition.

Carter proposes cohesive digital platforms that enhance visitor’s experience of Melbourne Now and increase its reach beyond the physical locations.

Emboldened by the appetite of enthusiasts to share, participate, and engage with the works and exhibitions they visit, the central ideas for the Microsite, and iOS/Android Smartphone Applications will satisfy the immediate requirements of the Melbourne Now campaign, but not be limited by them, thus providing a malleable forward- thinking solution.

Project Innovation/Need

To create a cross-platform solution, that aggregates data, maps, provides additional insights and enhances both exhibition enthusiasts and visitors. The microsite needed to be viewable across multiple browsers and platforms, apps optimised for iOS and Android devices. We needed to extract the data in a single feed, with the users able to select and save the information they require. We also wanted to deliver real time insights to the NGV through the GEO location data generated by app users to aid exhibition management and live performances.

Design Challenge

An iOS and Android application that act as an on-site guide to events, projects, artworks and artists at Melbourne Now. It allows users to personalise, record & share their journey, and extend their engagement beyond the physical confines of the exhibition through additional content. Functionality facilitates an exchange between artists and attendees at the exhibition by offering a space for shared engagement.

A careful balance of user experience design by communicating the exhibition mission & offering. The overall delivery is a truly device agnostic, responsive and accessible solution across a range of desktop and mobile devices.

User Experience

Creating a community driven experience was paramount. Creating an experience where visitors can personalise, record and share their Melbourne Now journey. As they navigate the exhibition users can plot a course and log their favourite works, creating a recorded tour of their experience that is sharable with their immediate circle or the wider Melbourne Now community.

As user’s look up more information on a piece via the Now Number, record their favourites through sharing and/or plot their curations, their digital footprint will be tracked.

Digital screen installations set up around the exhibition can be employed to project what’s trending, exhibition hotspots and social shares. The data the NGV captures is also available to the people to share and comment on.
