Coles Mobile Wallet is a holistic solution that offers Coles Credit Cards customers a convenient and secure way to access internet banking and account management on their smartphones. It also allows customers to pay for transactions and collect flybuys points using their mobile, without ever needing to take out their wallet. This new product positions Coles as an innovative leader in financial services technology, being the first app to combine rewards with mobile payment.

Project Brief

Coles Mobile Wallet is a complete solution for Coles Credit Card customers. By bringing their financial services offering to mobile, Coles is ensuring that customers enjoy the smart way to pay that’s quick, secure, and simple to use. Plus, it’s free.

The new Coles Mobile Wallet consists of a Coles Pay Tag that lets customers pay with their smartphone and the Coles Credit Card App that keeps track of purchases for convenience and control.

The app features:
– Secure login and simple 4 digit access code set-up
– Quick available credit preview
– Dashboard for easy access to various features
– Statements and transactions
– flybuys login
– Access to flybuys offers
– PayPass payment
– The ability for users to scan their flybuys on checkout

Project Innovation/Need

Coles Mobile Wallet is the first of its kind. By combining PayPass mobile payment with the ability for users to scan their flybuys rewards at checkout with an intuitive and secure banking app, Coles Mobile Wallet becomes a complete solution for managing Coles Credit Cards.

In addition to this, Coles Mobile Wallet makes it easier for customers to manage their accounts by providing them with their credit card account details as well as their flybuys in the same place, with live transaction data anywhere, anytime. Users can also view and activate special offers while at the supermarket and make the most out of their Coles Credit Card and flybuys.

Coles has seen a significant increase in online account access since app launch, demonstrating the success and popularity of the product. The app is also rated 3-4 stars on the App Store and 4.3 stars on Google Play.

Design Challenge

The biggest design challenge with any utility app is to make the design elements themselves invisible. First and foremost, the app has to be useful. The design must aid the user and guide them through the things they need to do, allow people to see what they need to see, without obvious prompting and without interruption.

To achieve this, comprehensive user testing was conducted on the wireframes in order to make the best decisions regarding user interface design, to ensure Coles Mobile Wallet is as simple and intuitive to use as possible. The design of the apps make use of iOS and Android design conventions where appropriate, and reflect the Coles brand in its simplicity and clarity.

User Experience

Coles Mobile Wallet has been designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind, in compliance with best practice standards according to iOS and Android user experience guidelines. Results from user testing the wireframes and visual designs were fed back into the design process, resulting in an improved user experience in the final product, saving time in development. The final product has a beautiful user interface and is a pleasure to use, ensuring the app is a positive and quality reflection of the Coles brand.

Early metrics show that the app is incredibly popular, with ongoing usage and login to user accounts increasing, demonstrating that the app has been very successful in engaging customers.




This award celebrates innovation and creativity in design of a unique user experience in the combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactive content for mobile. Consideration given to clarity of communication and the matching information style to audience.
