Project Brief

Upstairs Yellow approached Charlwood Design to help them create a new Straw Dispenser after finding there was a lack of innovation and design in the existing off the shelf units available to them.

The new unit had to meet the following requirements:

- Extremely cost efficient, with minimal material and assembly costs.
- Structurally strong enough and stable enough to hold 3 full bottles of drink
- Fool proof and fail proof single straw dispensing
- Easy refilling (straws)
- High quality fit and finish

Project Innovation/Need

The existing straw dispensers available were either expensive block like sheetmetal boxes, complex expensive plastic assemblies, or failed to really dispense straws consistently.

Charlwood created a clever dispensing system, that easily releases one straw at a time with a push of the tab. The single straw delivery prevents the contamination of different straws between users, something that many existing plastic straw dispensers fail to achieve.

All in an assembly that is made up of just 4 parts.

Design Challenge

Keeping the parts to a minimum proved to be the biggest design challenge. However the final outcome was successful, and the overall function was not sacrificed in anyway.

Effectiveness

This Straw Dispenser turns the everyday, thoughtless task of reaching for a straw and improves it- from both a consumer and a businesses point of view.

It is a very noticeable point of sale unit, cleverly exhibiting product and branding to the consumer in a new and fresh technique. But it is also a great bit of design, that allows the user to easily and quickly grab a straw without fail.
