Project Brief
The brief was to deliver a creative design and experience that will complement the rest of the Bank’s mobile apps, and stand out against the competitors mobile offering. The app targets new and existing Commonwealth Bank account holders, who make frequent transfers or cash payments to friends (focus on 18-30 demographic). It was created to change the way people transfer cash to each other.
Project Innovation / Need
The payment industry is seeing a slow shift away from cash & card to contactless and NFC payments via mobiles. Consumers are now living their lives all from the touch of their smart phones, using them to search, connect socially and do their banking. While there are several new players in the mobile payments space in Australia, no one has delivered against consumer need to put payments and secure mobile banking together in one mobile app. CommBank Kaching has incorporated standard mobile banking features like account balances and recent transactions with fast, secure, and easy payments. In addition, Kaching is the first mobile banking and payments application to incorporate NFC payments. iPhone 4 and 4S users can order a special case that plugs into the Kaching app, and allows them to use their mobile phone at any PayPass terminal in Australia.
User Experience
CommBank Kaching was designed as a native app, and uses intuitive features and gestures that match regular device interactions, making the app feel more like it is integrated part of the device. Sending money is made easy by using the existing contact lists within a device. Payments can be sent directly to email, mobile, and Facebook contacts without requiring the typical account and BSB details of the recipient. Kaching is also the first mobile payments application to allow social payments thru Facebook. Recent upgrades to the app include Bump payments, and in-app payment collections, meaning you can send and receive money directly to your phone using Kaching
Project Marketing
CommBank Kaching is designed to work specifically with CommBank transaction accounts and credit cards. Therefore, the primary audience for the app is existing customers who have smartphones. Download and registration targets were set to gain high levels of adoption with existing CommBank customers. But marketing for this mobile app was geared towards new AND existing customers, because it represents so much more than just another Bank product. Together with NetBank (CommBank's online banking platform), it represents one more great financial management solution that is offered to customers of CommBank.
