Project Overview

239 Old Street had been derelict since the 1960s, unloved and
unlovely. Committed to bringing the building back to life within
an ambitious timeframe of just 10 weeks, ThirdWay Interiors began
by stripping the space back to its shell. Only once this process
was complete, including sandblasting every concrete surface in the
building, could the reinvention of 239 Old Street begin. The aim was to create the most inspirational and innovative commercial space - and we believe we did just that.

Team

Partnerships were fundamental to this project. ThirdWay Interiors design and project team worked closely with Charles Armstrong and George Copeman from The Trampery, Dylan Williams and Arthur Sadoun from Publicis Worldwide and Jules Pipe, Mayor of the London Borough of Hackney. All of our projects have a company director involved to oversee and manage the process from start to finish. For this particular project and due to the intensity of it, we put our most senior team forward. This consisted of Fraser Munro, Company Director, Rob Goulder, Design Director, Louis Holmes, Projects Director and our Site Manager Anibal Camiletti. Together we aimed to create a ground-breaking, inspirational and innovative space. The project was much more than a technical challenge - It was more about becoming a team to create something really exciting for commercial spaces.

Project Brief

ThirdWay Interiors was tasked with designing The Trampery’s
new flagship space, based in the creative hub of Shoreditch.
There were a lot of boxes to tick, which included a large open plan area for start-ups, two self-contained spaces for partner companies,
various meeting rooms all with different design elements, kitchen facilities, an event space for up to 250 people and a members’ club. The 10,000 square foot space had to suit the diverse needs of a wide range of tenants, fostering creativity and collaboration for companies big and small.

Project Need

By working closely with everyone involved in this project, we were able to reinvent the working environment for innovators - Something that has never really been done before. The client didn't want to do anything which was out of keeping with the building and its old fashioned spirit, so ThirdWay took a lot of inspiration from the early 1920's to mid 1970's. One of the main attributes to the design and what separates it from other projects, is that it is ever changing. Its interior is very strong and bold with a huge amount of different wallpaper. It is a 10,000 square foot space but only a 3rd of that was delegated to desking. The various areas are designed to encourage collaboration and help bring people together in a creative and inspirational way.

Design Challenge

When it came to the design, versatility was key. ThirdWay Interiors
worked closely with The Trampery to imagine multiple and flexible work spaces with varied uses.
The main open plan layout provides a bright and airy
environment for 50 desks. Further open plan spaces for hot desking
facilitates interactions between users, which is crucial for the sorts of creative businesses that The Trampery attracts.
Such was the scale of ThirdWay’s plans to open up the space that only
one third of the building’s original interior walls were retained
within the new design. A fully equipped kitchen, private dining room,
range of meeting rooms and an art gallery compliment the open plan
workspaces, while at the rear of the building a grand ballroom of an
event space can welcome up to 250 people.
As well as reflecting the values of The Trampery and its unique mix
of users, the interior also had to be in keeping with the bricks and
mortar of the place. Between ThirdWay's design and delivery team and the passionate client team led by Charles Armstrong, we sourced scoured bespoke materials dating as far back as the 1970's.

Sustainability

The Trampery uses space strategically. Every aspect has been thought about in in-depth detail, including the lighting, the retro furniture, the colour schemes for each room and the bespoke materials throughout. We obsessed about every single detail in the floor plan - From the materials used on the walls and floors, to the ways the different spaces work and relate to one another, as well as the different kinds of people who will use the space and connect with each other. It is extremely different to any other project we have ever worked on because the decoration basically reflects the materials of the building itself.
