Project Overview

Inspired by the natural phenomenon of lightning, the designers aim to create a space full of energy.

The magnificent power of the lightning comes from the encountering of positive and negative electricity. This concept corresponds to the Yin and Yang in Chinese I-Ching, in which the everlasting cycle of energy is created.

Project Brief

This design starts from the visual imagery of the natural phenomenon, lightning, combined with the spirit of Eastern Ying-Yang and the application of Western aesthetics. It is a successful blending of the philosophy of the East and the West, and a bridging of the pragmatic and the spiritual.

Project Need

Inspired by the natural phenomenon of lightning, the designers aim to create a space full of energy.

The magnificent power of the lightning comes from the encountering of positive and negative electricity. This concept corresponds to the Yin and Yang in Chinese I-Ching, in which the everlasting cycle of energy is created.

The combination of Yin and Yang makes Tai chi, a Daoism cosmological concept. Based on the image of Tai Chi, in the center of the dining room and restaurant area lies a TV bench shaped as a united Ying-Yang rotation. This design brings up the spatial energy, functioning as the dynamic center of the lightning totem.

Design Challenge

The daylight can pass through the porch abundantly when opening the main door. By using a bevel cabinet on the right side to the wall, the design puts the laggard air at the entrance into moves, completing the emotion precipitation from the outer to the inner. The wooden modelling wall on the left side creates the calm atmosphere, and the deep-engraved seam on the slope façade corresponds to the dark recessed grooves on the ceiling, the design of which creates the rhymed extensions from sky, earth, and wall. Besides the delicate dark recessed grooves on the ceiling that add both the meaning of lighting and the metaphor of moving guide, a big storage cabinet is placed behind the wall. The designer tries to use lines to distract the observers, making the cabinet melt into the space naturally.

Sustainability

To rebuild the original building into a new one, the C&K team has taken the control to design since the building was in rough condition. The position of the residence meets the owner’s requirement, which is a 3-room configuration. In light of the owner who both advocates Germanic craftsmanship and expects a framework different from the rigid vertical and horizontal structure when considering concision and uniqueness, the designer seeks inspirations from the cuts to the diamonds. The designer, therefore, uses the reflections of firmness and flexibility as the outlines in many places, creating the dialogues in facades and reaching a spectacular viewpoint in aesthetics.
