Project Overview
The people of Duckling Hill exhibition and publication are the result of a research on a self organized public space in Hong Kong. The project was initiated by Parallel Lab with students from the School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
The aim of the project is to raise the public awareness on the confict between government planning and the real people’s need in matter of public space in Hong Kong.

Duckling Hill is a 150 meters high mount of rocks and trees emerging from the compact and standardized mass of Tseung Kwan O living Estates. Despite the constant pressure of urbanization, a growing group of hikers and elderly has elected the site as their preferred buffer zone for early morning exercise, gathering or silent contemplation. Gradually they have implemented a series of informal installations including shelter, stairs, rubbish bin and savage planting, a very soft way to appropriate the hill and giving it a strong status and unique identity.
Since 2006 however, the Government has been clearing the people's "illegal" infrastructure and heritage. In 2013, Parallel Lab and students from the School of Design of Hong Kong Polytechnic university became aware of this and began recording and studying the situation in Duckling Hill. The research focused on both the physical and the metaphorical relationship the people had with the hill. Dialogue also intensified between the walkers, Sai Kung District Council, Sheung Kung Hui Tseung Kwan O Aged Care Center, Students from Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the designers at Parallel Lab.
Project Innovation/Need
The publication (40 pages in colour, Chinese-English) gathers a series of essay, photographs and analytical drawings in a newspaper format.
The exhibition was presented at the Innovation Tower, HK Poly U (Hung Hom) and showcase a photographic reportage of the hill and its people and it included their DIY installations.
