Project Overview

VaxOnTime is a mobile application developed for any Android, iOS or Windows phone and allows parents to keep up to date with their children's past and upcoming vaccinations.

A simple and intuitive design enables even non-technically inclined parents to easily schedule immunisation appointments and be notified of any upcoming or missed vaccination dates based on their child's age.

With customisable profiles for up to 10 children, parents will never have to worry about missing their child's vaccination again.

Project Brief

Gridstone was engaged to design, develop, host and maintain an app for Victorian parents of children under 5 years of age. This app is to remind parents when their child’s vaccinations are due; enables them to locate their nearest immunisation provider, and; where possible, facilitates the process of making an appointment to receive vaccination.

An easy-to-use, intuitive app that assists parents to manage the immunisation requirements of their young children was the expected outcome of this project.

The VaxOnTime app was also required to include:
o Family name details including up to 10 siblings
o Possible location via GPS
o Email address
o Facebook sign on/handshake (Authorisation) details
o Mobile phone number
o Preferred clinic(s)
o Contact log
o Preferred contact method(s)

The end result of this project delivered over and above what the client requested and was done so ahead of the targeted deadline.

Project Need

The Victorian Government is committed to increasing immunisation rates in Victoria and was responsible for the introduction of ‘No Jab, No Play’ legislation put in place January 2016. Victorian parents are now required to provide proof their child’s immunisations are up to date in order to enrol them in childcare or kindergarten.

One of the most common reasons that parents cite for falling behind in their child’s vaccinations is simply that they forget when they are due. From birth to five years of age, there are seven age-points when a child becomes due for vaccination. Keeping track of these times can become difficult for parents with busy lifestyles.

The development of this app was conceived as one solution to assist parents to manage these requirements.

User Experience

The user experience is seamless and extremely intuitive. As soon as you open the app, the user is asked to add a child's profile to the account. The next time that user logs on, they have an instant view of all children's profiles which can be tapped to examine more closely.

Users are then taken to a full list of completed, overdue and upcoming vaccinations for the selected child. A warning symbol (!) encourages you to click on the notification for more information. This screen allows you to book an appointment or mark as completed.

Searching for a provider straight from the app makes the process easy. Users also have the option to choose from a list of provider locations. They can call the provider from the app or visit a provider's website quickly. Once booked, the appointment syncs with the device's calendar. Nice and easy.

Project Marketing

The project was launched just before the new 'no jab, no play' legislation was put into place. The media coverage on the topic was vast, as the anti-vaccination supporters vocally opposed the legislation.

A press conference was held on the day of the launch,19 December, and the story featured on many parents' blogs, medical and government websites, and news outlets such as the Herald Sun.

The Better Health Channel continues to advertise the benefits of the app and encourages Victorians to get the free download.

Project Privacy

Data privacy is no concern for users of the VaxOnTime app. Very little data is stored in the app, and what is stored is protected using the standard iOS database framework.

Only one network request is made to the client's backend which is used to locate immunisation providers close to either the user's current location or a manually selected location.
