Finalist

Summary

Jackie Made This came about after a holiday in India meeting hand weavers. It made me realise that more than anything I wanted to be using the knowledge and skills I had learnt through my degree - a Bachelors of Arts in Textile Design that I completed in 2008 - to weave hand woven products that people would enjoy and want to use for many years to come. This had been a dream for some time, but 2013 felt like to right time to make something happen, so Jackie Made This was born.
Each piece is handmade using natural fibers – wool, silk and cotton – so every one is unique. Products include scarves, shawls, baby wraps and now cushions.

Inspiration/Method

All work is produced on hand looms by Jackie. This piece was inspired by the end recipient - the wife of the customer. The scarf was commissioned as a birthday present and was inspired by her style - the colour, feel, length and pattern were all discussed in detail to create a piece that she would be able to wear all the time - at work, with their children or out on a special occasion.

Design Challenge

There were many design challenges associated with this project - communicating with the client to establish their need, perfecting the material and colour used, and timing as this job had a short deadline due to the impending birthday of the recipient.

This awards celebrates creative and innovative craftsmanship for fashion accessories. Consideration given to all aspects that relate to personal usage, aesthetics, selection of materials, and resolution of the overall function.
