Inspiration/Method

Light and geometry have always intrigued me. To find and give form to create an object that plays with both these elements let to the design of the Knicks light.
This light is designed to take advantage of highly efficient LED technology. It applies a mix of manual and digital fabrication processes. Custom designed and rapid prototyped components together with high performing materials, like carbon fiber rods, are crafted into this final object. Its warm-white LEDs match the brightness of a 25watt halogen bulb.

Design Challenge

The challenge was to make every component work as a supporting part of the whole object. Technology, materials and processes all impose their own limitations and qualities onto the project, all of which need to be solved and taken advantage of by the design process.
I believe there is interest in carefully designed and finely crafted one-off objects the challenge will be to find the right place in the market to meet that interest.

This award celebrates creative and innovative craftsmanship for either a component or overall product. Consideration given to concept, originality, function, aesthetic and energy effectiveness.
