Disaster Aware iOS, Android & Windows App - Dapper Apps

Silver

Project Overview

Nobody can ever be fully prepared for an emergency, but if you do find yourself in that situation the most precious thing is knowing where your family and loved ones are and that they are safe.

The Disaster Aware app allows you to create an emergency management plan and share that information with your loved ones. If you do find yourself in the unfortunate situation of using the app in an emergency you can be safe in knowing that the information is on the one thing almost everyone is guaranteed to have, their mobile phone.

Project Brief

The City of Cockburn created the Disaster Aware app to help the community understand the risks within Cockburn and how to best prepare for an emergency. The brief was to create an app that was informative, allowed residents to plan for an emergency and provide them with the information they need if they find themselves in an emergency situation.

The Disaster Aware app achieved this by allowing its users to create and share tailored emergency plans for families and friends. In addition to an education tool, the Disaster Aware app can send push notifications of emergencies unfolding within the City of Cockburn, to keep their residents informed, safe and aware of what is happening around them.

The app has been developed for iOS, Android and Windows to ensure almost 100% of residents can use this valuable tool.

Project Need

The Disaster Aware app is the first of its kind released by a local government in Australia, making it truly an innovative tool.

The City of Cockburn had always provided their residents with emergency management information but they wanted to go beyond providing just information, and actually deliver a tool that could also be useful in the case of an emergency. The app delivers on that.

The app content is largely delivered via videos and provides all the tools a resident needs to create an emergency management plan and share this with their friends and family.

In the case of an emergency the City of Cockburn can send the users push notifications with updated information, including locations of evacuation centres, and users can view their shared emergency management plans.

If you ever had to experience an emergency situation this is the app you would want in your pocket.

User Experience

The app provides the user with a lot of information and will be used by a wide variety of users, ranging from school groups through to elderly residents - so we had to make an app that was simple to use and consume information.

To achieve this we focused heavily on:

- A simple navigation system allowing quick access to key information in the case of an emergency
- Providing an app tutorial
- Guiding users through the process of creating an emergency management plan
- Embedding seven videos

The result is an app that contains a lot of information but is presented in a way that doesn't overwhelm the user and could prove to be a lifesaving tool in an emergency situation.

Project Marketing

The marketing has focused purely on residents within the City of Cockburn area, for obvious reasons.

This has included information on the City of Cockburn website, distribution to residents via existing channels and local newspaper editorial and advertising.

Project Privacy

No user data is stored within the app or by the City of Cockburn.
