Project Overview
By turning a static record into a dynamic and interactive experience we brought the traditional business report to life.
Each year Optus Business undertakes an in depth survey of decision-makers and publishes the insights within its Future of Business Report. This year Optus decided that the report itself should itself be multichannel. It should exemplify computer enabled data visualisation and communicate in a wholly new, interactive and engaging way.

Project Brief
The Future of Business report explores the four core areas influencing customer experience, the role of technology to support these functions and how this matches up with customers’ actual experience and their expectations for the future.
We were commissioned to make an online version, downloadable version, printed version and a video. The online version was to be a fully responsive solution for desktop, tablet and mobile. The time constraints were challenging; survey results would emerge just 6 weeks ahead of launch and not be finalised until 4 weeks ahead of launch.
Project Need
Mnet managed the project to allow for late delivery of content; developing the responsive website structure within well communicated constraints; in effect defining the acceptance criteria for content collaboratively with the client.
The responsive solution is more sophisticated than a single column based pattern. The desktop version breaks out into 3 columns; with each column having a distinct role and scrolling at different rates. Other adaptive features included separate solutions for the exposed Twitter feed between desktop and mobile.
Further scroll related features included triggered SVG animations, optimised for the widest possible range of devices and browsers. The data visualisations were designed to work statically and animated with minimal adaption in both web and in print.
The Future Of Business Report 2014 shows what is possible in terms of a digital report. It delivers narrative in a new way, rich with animations and interactions that bring the traditional business report to life.
User Experience
We focussed on serving the narrative.
We asked ourselves how can we make this report as light as flicking through paper? At the same time, how can we draw the user deeper into the story?
We decided to build the navigation on scrolling. The whole report is on one page, consistent with the linear nature of a story. The user need do nothing other than scroll down to continue to experience the content.
But as easy as scrolling is, we wanted to make it irresistible to keep going. Business reports are not for the faint hearted and we wanted to draw in both casual and committed readers.
Scroll triggered SVG animations, used sparingly and with the right tempo, create interest and moments of delight to encourage the user onwards. Distinct colour changes between sections delineate sections and invigorate the user as they continued reading the report. Accessible proportions of text and graphics, with ‘tap to read more’ provide different layers of depth to cater for different levels of user.
The Future of Business Report 2014 demonstrates design and innovation. The conception, refined layout and implementation of Optus Business style guidelines represent solid design. The experience on all devices is consistently engaging and exemplifies our mobile first approach, whilst the architecture and many of the scroll related features are truly innovative.
