Project Overview

The biomedical industry is globally recognized as one of the high-tech emerging industries, and a strategic industry that countries around the world are competing to develop. Cluster development and industry-university-research interaction are the main trends in the current construction of global biomedical industrial parks. As an important part of the development plan of China's strategic emerging industries, the biomedicine industry has gradually become an important industry driving urban economic development. Taking the practice of Minghu International Biopharmaceutical Production Base as an example, by applying relevant design methods and strategies to break existing paradigms, we explore the spatial types of pharmaceutical industrial parks under the development background of the new era and reconstruct the human-oriented garden-style ecological parks.

Project Brief

The design takes the fission growth of biological cells as inspiration, complies with the characteristics of natural terrain, and puts forward the core concept of "organic growth, infinite fusion" to build a special industrial park integrating production, research and development, exhibition, communication, and life. Based on this, the goal and vision of "Cell Garden" are proposed, which breaks the traditional layout of industrial parks and tries to create a high-quality garden park with green, ecological, and sustainable development. The project is located in the Changling Mountain area, Lixia District, Jinan City. It is South of Century Avenue, east of Fengshan Road. Changling Mountain is located on the east side of the base, which is an important part of the spatial landscape pattern in the east of Jinan. It has high public awareness and is iconic in the surrounding areas.

Project Innovation/Need

In the practice of this project, through the intervention of streets, gardens, squares, courtyards and other elements, a modern, open, green and ecological garden park that is different from the traditional industries is created to meet the diversified production and life needs. The division of the platform naturally creates two landscape corridors, introducing the concept of "street" in the urban space system into the park, thus blurring the boundary between the interior of the park and the urban environment, giving the site an open and shared attitude. Different from ordinary city streets, the two main axes of the park not only solve the internal traffic organization but also emphasize the shaping of landscape and outdoor communication places. A relaxed and lively park atmosphere is created through some creative landscape slopes. Inside each group, through the enclosing layout, courtyards are introduced to alienate the single working environment. From the research and development office to the workshop, combined with some water features, sculptures, and distinctive seats, the design provides a relatively private resting space for every scientific researcher to stimulate creativity. Each individual building is equipped with a rooftop garden, which is combined with street and courtyard spaces to form a multi-tiered landscape system, allowing employees to experience shade and sunlight in every corner of the park.

Design Challenge

The challenge lies in the character of the site and its surrounding natural environment. The whole site is high in the south and low in the north, high in the east and low in the west, and the vertical height difference is nearly 20 meters. The layout of the plan follows the "organic growth" of the topographic characteristics. According to the current characteristics of the vertical slope of the site, the method of breaking the whole into pieces is adopted to organically divide the site into four platforms to form a group layout, showing a pattern of high and low. Each group is based on the enclosing layout, with rich spatial levels, creating an overall image of flexible and diverse "infinite integration". The group layout solves the height difference of the site, creates multiple levels of space, increases the openness of the public space, and breaks the single traffic attribute of the outdoor space in the existing industrial park. Paying attention to the design of the public space networks has become the focus of this design, and it is also the alienation category of the external spatial attributes of modern industrial parks. The design strives to break the factory image of traditional industrial buildings, and reconstruct the facade form with diverse functions, pleasant scale and rich details. The buildings adopt red as the main color, interspersed with white and gray, breaking the cold image of industrial buildings in the past and creating a warm and comfortable environment.

Sustainability

Green garden microclimate: The design adopts a clustered enclosure layout, forming different courtyard spaces, and planting greening to create a comfortable green courtyard environment. This effectively adjusts the microclimate within the site and reduces the urban heat island effect. Green and sustainable building materials: The main facade of the building adopts renewable ceramic cladding, a recyclable building material that enables the circular application of green building materials. At the same time, local production and procurement reduce transportation costs and further effectively minimize energy consumption during construction. The building layout fully takes into account the local sun path and wind direction, with the research and development office and dormitory buildings, arranged north-south to maximize natural ventilation, which can reduce air conditioning energy consumption and enhance indoor comfort. Reasonable development of underground space: Two layers of the basement are constructed for equipment rooms and parking, freeing up more ground space for greenery. This creates a pleasant green landscape and a comfortable outdoor space environment.
